Can baseball survive in Beloit?
Against the odds, Snappers have outlasted minor-league teams in Madison and Rockford
Certainly, the obstacles are many. Beloit is one of the league's smaller markets with the league's oldest stadiums and only sketchy prospects for a new facility. Snappers general manager Jeff Vohs, who has been with the team for eight years, the last four as GM, is well aware of the obstacles. But he is also optimistic.Exactly.
"A few years ago there were some people here who were worried and there was sort of a doomsday scenario," said Vohs. "We've kind of turned it around and our attendance has actually been going up the last several years."
But if the Snappers were going to go away easily, they'd already be gone. Instead, they've outlasted larger markets like Madison and Rockford to be playing in their 27th season.
Read the whole thing. There is stuff about the stadium deal that fell through and the death of a big supporter of any new stadium.
