April 17, 2009 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Clinton LumberKings defeated the Timber Rattlers 7-1. Travis Howell and Nate Tenbrink both homered for Clinton and Steve Hensley pitched 5-2/3 innings without allowing a run while striking out eight.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED: The Timber Rattlers had runners at first and third with no outs in the second inning, but did not score.

OPPORTUNITY TAKEN: The LumberKings loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning and scored a pair of runs. Kalian Sams drew a walk to force in a run and Terry Serrano’s fielder’s choice made the score 2-0.

WALK? WALK? Sams was a Timber Rattler outfielder in 2007 and drew 15 walks while striking out 73 times in 48 games. In his career before this season, Sams had walked 52 times and struck out 192 times in 136 games (455 at bats).

LONG GONE: Tenbrink hit a two-out solo homer off Rattler started Trey Watten in the third inning. That home run was the first allowed by Watten this season. Howell his homer, a two run shot, off Rattler reliever Evan Frederickson in the sixth inning. It was the first homer off Frederickson this season. The Wisconsin lefty allowed two homers in 32 innings last season for Helena and West Virginia.

LIVE BY THE DOUBLE PLAY, DIE BY THE DOUBLE PLAY: The Rattlers have turned a league leading 13 double plays after turning another one last night. Before the game against the L-Kings, Wisconsin opponents had not turned a single twin killing against them. But, Clinton turned four double plays against the Rattlers last night and only one was conventional. There was a 6-4-2 double play on a pop up that dropped in the infield, two strike-‘em out, throw-‘em out double plays, and a 4-6-3 double play.

A SMALL VILLAGE: The Rattlers still managed to leave nine runners on base in the game.

STARTING TO BUILD: After a slow start to his season, Brett Lawrie is currently on a four game hitting streak. He had his second triple of the season last night. The 2008 #1 pick of the Brewers is 5-for-11 (.455) during the recent hot streak to raise his season average to .300 (6-for-20).

CLINTON STARTING PITCHER: RH Brett Lorin was the 5th round pick of Seattle in the 2008 draft out of Cal State Long Beach. In his final season there, he was 5-3 with a 2.61ERA. Lorin started his pro career with Everett in the Northwest League. He was 1-0 with a 2.82ERA in five starts for the Aquasox before being promoted to the Timber Rattlers. Lorin was 0-2 in eight games (six starts) for the Rattlers with a 4.80ERA and 32 strikeouts over 30 innings. In his start prior to tonight, Lorin beat Burlington on April 10. He allowed one run on three hits over six innings. Tonight is Lorin’s first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Brewers.
