April 23, 2009 Game Notes

ABOUT WEDNESDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Peoria Chiefs 3-2. Michael Marseco drove in a pair of runs with a triple in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Rattlers the victory.

END OF THE LINE #1: The victory ended Wisconsin’s six-game losing streak.

END OF THE LINE #2: Marseco’s game winning triple snapped an 0-for-22 slump. Marseco’s last hit was a double in his last at bat of the game on April 11 vs. Quad Cities.

END OF THE LINE #3: When catcher Sean McCraw scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in yesterday’s game, it was the first time the Rattlers had a lead in a game since April 14.

IN A PINCH: Juan Sanchez entered yesterday's game as a pinch runner in the ninth inning after Shawn Zarraga drew a leadoff walk. Sanchez scored the tying run on Marseco's triple. That marks the second time this season that Sanchez has scored a run after entering the game as a pinch runner.

A TRIPLE? YES, A TRIPLE: There were runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning when Marseco lined the first pitch from Kevin Kreier over the head of right fielder Kyler Burke. McCraw went back to tag and to not get doubled off in case of a catch. By the time he scored, Marseco was at third base and the official scorer properly ruled the play a game-winning triple.

THREE HITS? The Rattlers managed just three hits in the game. But, they drew six walks, including two in the bottom of the ninth.

FOUR OR LESS: The Rattler offense has scored four runs or less in nine of ten games this season. The Wisconsin pitchers have allowed four runs or less in seven of ten games this season.

THERE WAS PITCHING, TOO: Rattler starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta allowed one run on three hits over six innings and tied his professional high for strikeouts with 10.

ESCAPE ACT: Rattler reliever Trey Watten allowed one run on five hits over three innings. In the top of the seventh with the score tied 1-1, He faced runners on second and third with one out. The Chiefs unsuccessfully tried a suicide squeeze, but the hitter missed the sign and McCraw picked the runner off third.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .182 as a team. They have scored 27 runs (2.7/game) and hit four home runs. The Chiefs are hitting .266 as a team. OUT OF THE DRAFT 2008: The Cubs have placed 12 members of their 2008 draft class on the current Peoria roster. Flaherty was a supplemental first round pick in the ’08 draft. HEY, ISN’T YOUR DAD…? Peoria catcher Michael Brenly is the son former Major league catcher and manager Bob Brenly. Brenly currently is a television analyst for the Chicago Cubs.

PEORIA STARTING PITCHER (GM 1): RHP Chris Archer was the 5th round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the 2006 draft out of Clayton (NC) high school. He joined the Chicago Cubs organization – along with two other minor leaguers -- in a trade that sent Mark DeRosa to the Indians in December of 2008. Archer spent all of 2008 with the Lake County Captains of the South Atlantic League. He was 4-8 in 27 starts with an ERA of 4.29. He walked 84 and struck out 106 in 115-1/3 innings pitched. Tonight is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers, but in 2008 Archer faced the West Virginia Power, the SAL affiliate of the Brewers, three times. IN two regular season starts, Archer had a pair of no decisions and allowed four runs on 13 hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts over 11 innings. But, in one playoff start against the Power, Archer gave up nine runs on seven hits in 1-2/3 innings for the loss in a 10-0 game. In his start prior to this evening, Archer allowed one run on three hits over five innings over five innings at Quad Cities on April 17. He walked one, hit two, and struck out three in a no decision.

PEORIA STARTING PITCHER (GM 2): RHP Alberto Cabrera was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2005. Cabrera pitched in the Dominican Summer League in 2006 and for the Boise Hawks in the Northwest League during 2007. In 2008, Cabrera made 12 appearances (11 starts) for the Chiefs. He was 4-6 with 30 walks, 37 strikeouts, and a 5.71ERA in 52 innings pitched. Cabrera faced the Timber Rattlers one time in 2008. He picked up the win on May 24 at O’Brien Field by allowing two runs on three hits over five innings. This is the first time Cabrera will be facing an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. In his start prior to this evening, Cabrera took the loss at Quad Cities on April 17 in relief of Archer. He allowed three runs on one hit with three walks and a strikeout in 2-1/3 innings of relief. Tonight is Cabrera’s first start of 2009.
