April 18, 2009 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Clinton LumberKings defeated the Timber Rattlers 8-4. Former Timber Rattler pitcher Brett Lorin struck out 10 batters over six innings for his second win in two starts for the LumberKings this season. Wisconsin defenders committed four errors and Rattler pitchers issued six walks in the game.

RIGHT OFF THE BAT: After the Rattler hitters went down in order in the top of the first inning, Denny Almonte hit the first pitch of the bottom of the inning to center for a double. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third and a single by Scott Savastano knocked in Almote for a 1-0 lead.

IN THE HOLE EARLY: In the eight innings Clinton hit last night, they had a runner on at least second base with no outs in five of those innings.

TWO MORE: Clinton tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth inning with a double, a walk, a sacrifice bunt with an error, and a wild pitch.

BACK IN THE SWING: Edgar Trejo hit a homer for the Rattlers last night. His fifth inning home run was his first since June 18, 2008 when he hit one for Helena against Great Falls in the Pioneer League. Trejo was injured in the next game and missed the rest of the Helena season.

U-G-L-Y: Clinton had a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. They would score two runs in that inning without the benefit of a hit. There were two walks, two errors, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to account for the runs.

HICCUP: The Rattler defense committed two errors in the first six games of the season. They have been charged with six in the first two games of this series with Clinton.

GOING DEEP: The Rattlers trailed 8-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning. Outfielder Michael Vass lined his first homer of the year to lead off the inning. The shot by Vass rang off the foul pole in left field. The homer was the ninth in his career. Vass hit seven in Helena and one in West Virginia last season.

CLINTON STARTING PITCHER: RH Aaron Pribanic was Seattle’s 5th round pick in the 2008 draft. Pribanic transferred to the University of Nebraska from Hutchinson Community College for his junior season. He went 3-4 with a 4.72ERA in 17 games (12 starts) with 32 walks and 59 strikeouts over 74-1/3 innings for the Cornhuskers. After signing with Seattle, Pribanic made three appearances (one start) for the Arizona League affiliate of the Mariners. He went 1-2 with a 15.43 ERA (eight runs over 4-2/3 innings pitched). In his first start for the LumberKings, Pribanic allowed one hit over six shutout innings at Burlington for the win on April 11. He walked one and struck out five in the game. Pribanic is making his first appearance against the Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Brewers.
