FOX CITIES FOXES 4
TOPEKA REDS......5
The Foxes led 4-0 but, the Reds scored one in the seventh, three in the eighth, and one in the ninth for the win. Ray Vaughn hit a leadoff homer in the ninth to win the game.
Dean Chance was the starter for the Foxes. He pitched six scoreless innings, but left with one out in the eighth. The Reds tied the game with a three-run homer by Philly Dashner in the eighth after Chance left the game.
BLAST FROM THE PAST: The manager of the Reds in 1960 was Johnny Vander Meer.
Vander Meer pitched back-to-back no-hitters in 1938 as a member of the Reds. The best quote I have ever read about Vander Meer is this one from that link with his name. I will reproduce it here in its entirety...well, without the embedded links.
"I could've kissed him - the tension was eating me up." - Johnny Vander Meer, about Debs Garms finally getting a hit off him in the fourth inning of the game after his two no-hitters, one in which he pitched a three-hitter while Cy Young was in attendance.Yeah. No pressure there.
The Foxes fell back below .500 to 8-9. They trail Burlington and Sioux City by 3.5 games in the Three-I League.

APPLETON FOXES 100 001 000 - 2 5 0
BELOIT BREWERS 001 000 000 - 1 6 5
Tony Menendez (7IP) and Jeff Anderson (2IP) combined for the Appleton win. Troy Thomas went 4-for-4 and drove in one run for the Foxes.
Thomas drove in a run in the top of the first inning. Thomas scored the winning run in the sixth after a single to right by Jim Winters was misplayed for one of five Beloit errors.
The Brewers put runners on third in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Anderson got out of both jams for his second save.
Menendez won his fourth game of the season.
The Foxes are 25-12 and just 1/2 game behind the Madison Muskies in the Midwest League Northern Division.
