May 27, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat Kane County 2-1. Cutter Dykstra tripled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Andre Lamontagne pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth for his fifth save.

EARLY ON: The Cougars took a 1-0 lead on a two-out solo homer by Juan Nunez in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Rattlers tied the game with a two-out RBI single by Erik Miller in the top of the fifth.

ENDGAME: Wisconsin had two out and none aboard when Pete Fatse drew a walk in the top of the ninth inning against Jonathan Joseph. Dykstra followed with a triple to right-center and Fatse scored what turned out to be the winning run.

ARNETT UPDATE: Eric Arnett was the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. He pitched six innings to set a new high as a professional. Arnett scattered six hits and a walk and struck out six. He was not involved in the decision. Arnett gave up his seventh homer of the season, but lowered his ERA to 7.52.

MERRY, MERRY MONTH OF MAY: Lamontagne is 5-for-5 in save opportunities this month. He has not allowed a run in any of those save opportunities. Overall, Lamontagne has appeared in nine games in May. He has allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out 13 over 12-2/3 innings in those games.

PITCHING IN: Jon Pokorny pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three to get credit for the win last night. In his last seven outings, Pokorny has allowed two runs and struck out 18 in 11-2/3 innings.

UNLUCKY THIRTEEN: Scooter Gennett went 0-for-4 last night and saw his hitting streak end at 13 games.

TWO OUT RALLIES: All three runs last night were scored after there were two outs and none on base. The Rattlers tied the game in the fifth when Michael Marseco was hit by a pitch from Ian Krol with two outs. Austin Stockfisch kept the inning alive with a single. Miller followed with his RBI single.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE: The Rattlers are now 2-10 in games decided by one run this season. The only other time the Rattlers were victorious in a one-run game this season was in the first game of the season. On April 9, they topped Kane County 3-2.

TAKING THE FIFTH: The Rattlers have won five straight games. The last time the Rattlers won five consecutive games happened as part of a six-game winning streak from May 16-20, 2009.

AT HOME ON THE ROAD: Wisconsin won their sixth road game of the season last night. It also guaranteed the Rattlers a win in a road series for the first time this season. The last time the Rattlers won a road series was when they took three out of four games from Cedar Rapids at Perfect Game Field August 11-14.

SPEAKING OF CEDAR RAPIDS: The Rattlers continue their 13-game road trip on Friday night when they begin a four-game series with the Kernels in Cedar Rapids. Wisconsin continues the swing June 1-3 at Fort Wayne and June 4-6 at Lake County.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are 20-27 and in sixth place in the Midwest League’s Western Division. In their most recent series, Kane County was swept in four games at Clinton. The Cougars have lost eight in a row and are 1-9 in their last 10 games.

2009 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin went 7-12 against the Cougars in 2009. The Rattlers were 4-7 in 11 games between the teams at Elfstrom Stadium last season.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 4-1 against Kane County this season. Wisconsin won two of three from the Cougars at Time Warner Cable Field to start the 2010 season. The Rattlers swept a doubleheader on Opening Night (4/9) by scores of 3-2 and 6-3. Kane County won the final game of the series 10-5. The Rattlers are back down at Elfstrom Stadium to wrap up the first half of the season with a three game series June 18-20.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .255 as a team. They have scored 228 runs (5.0/game) and hit 21 home runs. The Cougars are hitting .235 as a team. They have scored 205 runs (4.4/game) and hit 20 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.45 while allowing a total of 236 runs (5.1/game) this season. Kane County pitchers have a team ERA of 3.96 while allowing 218 runs (4.6/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 74 errors. The Cougars defense has committed 66 errors. Wisconsin is 6-11 in road games this season. Kane County is 12-9 at Elfstrom Stadium this season.

KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: RHP Dan Straily was Oakland’s 24th round pick in the 2009 draft. He was selected out of Marshall. In his final season with the Thundering Herd, Straily went 4-3 with a 4.27ERA in 13 games. He spent his first pro season with Vancouver, Oakland’s Northwest League affiliate. He was 5-3 with a 4.19ERA in 16 games (11 starts) with the Canadians. Straily struck out 66 and walked 18 in 59 innings with Vancouver. In his start prior to this evening, Straily allowed one run on three hits over five innings at Clinton on May 22. Straily struck out eight, but was not involved in the decision. On April 10, 2010, Straily made the start against the Timber Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six over five innings to pick up the win.
