May 22, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Burlington Bees beat the Timber Rattlers 16-4. The Bees collected 22 hits in the game and scored in every inning except the sixth.

FROM THE START: The first two Bees’ batters in the game singled off Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Arnett. Wil Myers followed with a three-run homer.

TWO OUT BINGO: The Bees’ scored single runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. All four runs scored on two-out RBI hits off Arnett.

STRANDING THEM: Wisconsin reliever Jon Pokorny came into the game with runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the sixth. He left both inherited runners on base when he recorded the final out of the inning. Pokorny has inherited 12 runners this season. He has allowed only one of those runners to score.

OFFENSE: Wisconsin got three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to get to within 8-4.

PULLING AWAY: The Bees scored five times in the top of the eighth inning and took a commanding 13-4 lead.

ON THE HILL: Rattlers shortstop Michael Marseco was called into action in the top of the ninth inning. Marseco had pitched a scoreless eighth inning at Peoria on July 27, 2009. He allowed three runs on three hits with a walk.

MENTIONING THIS JUST TO MENTION IT: The 22 hits off the Timber Rattlers pitchers last night was the most since September 2, 2004. Wisconsin allowed 23 hits in a 20-7 loss at Peoria on that day.

NUMBER TEN: Scooter Gennett was 0-for-3 in his first three plate appearances last night. He singled to lead off the eighth inning and extended his hitting streak to ten games. This is the longest hitting streak by a Timber Rattler in 2010. It matches Brock Kjeldgaard’s 10-game streak from August of 2009 for the longest Rattlers’ hitting streak in the two seasons as a Brewers’ affiliate.

A BIT MORE ON THAT: Gennett has at least one hit in 18 of his last 19 games. An eight-game hitting streak was stopped in game one of a doubleheader on May 11 at Quad Cities. The current ten-game streak started in game two of that doubleheader on May 11. Gennett also has one hit in 24 of his last 26 games. He has been held hitless in six of the 39 games he has played this season. Gennett has only been held out of the hit column in consecutive games one time this season (April 18 & 19).

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Burlington Bees are the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. They are 15-25 and in seventh place in the Midwest League’s Western Division. The Bees are 4-6 in their last 10 games. In 2009, the Bees went 29-41 in the first half, but qualified for the playoffs with a 35-34 second half record to win the wild card. Burlington advanced to the Midwest League Championship Series, but lost in three games to Fort Wayne. The Bees have won two straight Western Division titles. They were the Midwest League Champions in 2008.

2009 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin went 5-9 against the Bees in 2009. The Rattlers were 1-2 in three games between the teams at Time Warner Cable Field last season.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers trail the season series with the Bees 1-3. Burlington won two out of three from the Timber Rattlers at Community Field April 14-16. Burlington won 8-6 and 11-4 in the first two games of the series. Wisconsin won 9-0 in the series finale.

BURLINGTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Bryan Paukovits was picked by the Royals in the 44th round out of Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California for the 2006 draft and signed as a draft-and-follow before the 2007 draft. Paukovits pitched for Burlington (NC) in the Appalachian League in 2007, missed 2008 with an injury, and pitched for Idaho Falls in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 4.61ERA in 26 games (23 starts) during his pro career before this season. In his last outing for the Bees, Paukovits made the start and took the loss against the Peoria Chiefs on May 14. He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
