Headline from the 7/2/85 PC: Chicken's in top form, but Foxes aren't, 12-8

The Famous Chicken made his first ever appearance in Appleton and the fans showed up for one of the bigger attendance numbers of 1985.

The Foxes had an early lead thanks to that five-run first inning and Jim Winters drove in four runs, but Appleton's five pitchers couldn't keep the Rangers under wraps.

On top of all that, there was a play at second base on a steal that went against the Foxes. A Rangers runner was called safe and (according to Gary Shriver's writeup) manager Sal Rende, Pitching Coach Mitch Lukevics, and catcher Jim Markert were run from the game.

Now, Shriver doesn't go through the particulars of the argument, but the ejection of Rende is an issue during the upcoming week thanks to an editorial in the July 7 edition of the PC.

The Foxes loss knocked them to 50-26. They are still in first place in the Northern Division of the Midwest League, but their lead over Madison is down to nine games.
