Just because the Kernels have been away during the floods in Cedar Rapids, doesn't mean 'out of sight, out of mind'.
The Kernels, in town to play the Cougars this weekend, don’t have a home field at their disposal, anyway. Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is being used as a command post for the National Guard, Cedar Rapids Police and other municipal departments in the wake of severe flooding this week in the city.
...
John Rodgers, the Kernels’ long-time radio play-by-play man on KMRY-AM-1450, said the Kernels have been glued to the TV while on their recent road trip. The Kernels were in Beloit before arriving in Geneva.
“These guys haven’t grown up in Cedar Rapids, but they are very worried and very burdened,” Rodgers said. “They’d like to be there to help.”
Rodgers said the radio station even considered aborting Friday’s broadcast but instead opted to provide a diversion from what he labeled “the flood of a lifetime.”
“We just want to try and provide an outlet for some enjoyment, maybe some hope and happiness, because everyone is suffering, whether they lost a house or not,” Rodgers said.
