@Cedar Rapids 8, Quad Cities 3:
The proudest moment of Matt Crawford’s life came in May.@Peoria 7, Beloit 3: Chiefs version
It didn’t have a thing to do with baseball. The Cedar Rapids Kernels outfielder checked the mail one day and found he had a package from Mercer College in Macon, Ga.
It was his diploma.
“I’ll just put it this way, my mom was crying over the phone when I called and told her I got it. She was so happy,” said Crawford, whose three hits helped Cedar Rapids to its eighth straight victory last night, 8-3, over Quad Cities at Memorial Stadium. “My parents stressed when I was little to get a college degree. That just made their day. That was way more important than baseball.”
Yet this baseball thing seems to be working out, too.
Kane County 10 @ Clinton 0: “He pitched an extremely good game, and you got to tip your cap to a guy that does that,” said Clinton manager Scott Steinmann of Capra’s outing. “We’re a decent offensive team, and we move on to tomorrow.”
