ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers lost to the Swing 12-2. Quad Cities scored in six of the nine innings and Rattler pitching handed out ten walks on the night. Bryan Anderson had a triple, a double, and three RBI to pace the Swing offense.
HEARNES SO GOOD: Swing starting pitcher Trey Hearne scattered eight hits over seven innings and allowed just two runs for his second win of the season over the Timber Rattlers. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. In 15-2/3 innings against Wisconsin this season, Hearne has an ERA of 1.15 and has walked one while striking out seventeen.
SIX PACK: Rattler starting pitcher Paul Fagan walked six batters in a game for the third time this season. He handed out six free passes in 4-2/3 innings last night. Fagan also allowed seven runs on seven hits for his eleventh loss of the season.
CUTTING OFF THE INHERITENCE: Rattler reliever Edgar Guaramato relieved Fagan with a runner on second and two out in the fifth. Guaramato ended with inning without allowing the run to score. This season, Guaramato has inherited 22 base runners when he has entered games and only four of those runners have scored.
ON THE DOWN LO: Kuo Hui Lo was 1-for-4 last night to extend his season high hitting streak to six games. He is 8-for-23 during the current streak.
THE LOW DOWN: Robby Hudson is hitless in his last eleven at bats. This streak began after he had four straight hits in four at bats over two games in the first two games of the Peoria series.
CO-LEADER: Alex Gary homered in the bottom of the seventh inning to give him five long balls on the season. He is the active leader on the Rattlers in homers and is tied with Casey Craig for the team lead. Craig had five homers in 62 games before being promoted to Inland Empire. Gary has his five home runs in 28 games.
CO-LEADER (PT II): Ron Garth collected his sixteenth double of the season last night. He is tied with Luis Valbuena for the team lead in that category. Three of Garth’s last four hits have been doubles.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Swing of the Quad Cities are the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They are currently 13-10 in the second half and tied for second place in the Western Division. Overall this season, the Swing are 47-44. They did not qualify for the playoffs in the first half.
VS. QUAD CITIES IN ’06: The Swing lead the season series 7-2. They took two out of three games at Fox Cities Stadium in mid-April. The teams met in a five game series at John O’Donnell Stadium in the final series of the first half. Wisconsin won the first game of a doubleheader on the first day of the series and lost the next four games to the Swing.
PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA's Top 30 list of Cardinal prospects has three members of the Swing roster on it. Shortstop Tyler Greene is the highest rated Cardinal prospect at #3. Pitcher Mark McCormick is next at #5. Shortstop Jose Martinez is on the list at #28. Quad Cities has four members of the 2006 Cardinal draft class on their roster. Pitchers Chris Perez (Supplemental 1st round) and Tyler Norrick (6th) are joined by outfielders John Jay (2nd) and Shane Robinson (5th).
MAJOR LEAGUE: Larry Bigbie is on a rehab assignment for the Cardinals. He is scheduled to appear in the first three games of this series. In the first four games of his rehab assignment, Bigbie is 5-for-14 with no homers and an RBI.
OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Victor Moreno was signed as a minor league free agent by the Cardinals in October of 2005. Moreno pitched in 2003 and 2004 in the Angel organization, reaching the Arizona League in 2004. He was injured and missed all of 2005. In his last start, Moreno lasted just 1-2/3 innings at Dayton and gave up eight runs on six hits on July 8. This will be his second appearance against Wisconsin this season. On June 17 he worked two innings of relief at John O’Donnell Stadium and gave up no runs on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Today is his third start for the Swing.
