Game Notes for 7/18

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers edged the Swing of the Quad Cities 2-1 in twelve innings. Eddy Hernandez drove in pinch runner Alex Gary with the winning run with a two-out single.

BAGELS, LOTS OF ‘EM: The Swing scored a run off Rattler starter David Asher on a one out RBI single in the top of the first inning by Tyler Greene. The Swing didn’t score for the next 11-2/3 innings.

TWIN KILLINGS: The two teams combined to turn eight double plays last night. Wisconsin turned five and the Swing got three. The Rattlers almost turned six, but it was ruled the second baseman Luis Valbuena was not on the base when he took a throw from third baseman Ron Garth on the pivot in the eleventh inning.

ASHER, THE STARTER: In two starts with the Rattlers Asher has pitched eleven innings and allowed just one run.

MY SACRIFICE: After Adam Moore singled to start the bottom of the twelfth and Gary pinch ran, Mike Saunders dropped his second sacrifice bunt of the season. Saunders is tied with Robby Hudson for the team lead in that category.

OUT OF THE JAM: Winning pitcher Brian Kappel gave up a lead-off double and committed an error to put Jose Martinez on third base with no outs in the top of the twelfth. Kappel struck out the next two batters and got Shane Robinson to pop out for the final out of the inning. Kappel picked up his first Midwest League win when the Rattlers scored in the bottom of the inning.

OT WIN: Last night was the first extra inning win for the Rattlers in the second half and their fourth in nine extra inning games this season.

BEST RUN OF THE HALF: By winning five of their last eight games, the Rattlers are on their best stretch of the half and their best since they won six straight from June 1-7.

FOUR OR LESS: Last night was the forty-sixth time the Rattlers have allowed their opponents four or fewer runs. Wisconsin is 27-19 when that occurs.

CH-CH-CHANGES: The Swing roster is a bit different today. Starting pitcher Cory Meacham has been promoted to Palm Beach. Larry Bigbie, who was on a major league rehab assignment for the Cardinals, has been moved up to Springfield, the Texas League affiliate of the Cardinals.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Adam Daniels was the 15th round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State University. He was 2-1 with an ERA of 4.50 ERA in ten games (five starts) for the New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League in 2005. Today is his sixteenth start of the season for the Swing. He lost his last start for Quad Cities. The Beloit Snappers beat him at John O’Donnell Stadium on July 13. In that game, Daniels allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings, did not walk a batter, and struck out six. The Rattlers beat Daniels in game one of a doubleheader at the JOD on June 15. Daniels struck out a career high ten batters and allowed two unearned runs on seven hits over six innings in a 2-1 loss.
