Game Notes for 7/17

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Rattlers set a season high for runs in a game and hits in a game with their 16-7 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities. Luis Valbuena homered, drove in four runs, and scored three to lead the offense. The Rattlers banged out nineteen hits in the win.

THAT DIDN’T LAST LONG: The previous highs for hits and runs in a game by a Rattler team this season was set on July 12 at Peoria when they scored fifteen runs on eighteen hits.

NEW LEADER IN THE CLUBHOUSE: By getting four RBI yesterday, Valbuena extended his season total to 38. He is the new team leader in that category for the Rattlers. Casey Craig had been the team leader with 35, even though he was promoted to Inland Empire after the Midwest League All-Star Game. Valbuena became the third Rattler to drive in four runs in a game this season. Nick Prosise and Jeff Flaig are the others.

ONE MORE ON VALBUENA: Yesterday’s ninth inning home run was his third of the season and first at Fox Cities Stadium.

QUARTET OF THREES: Valbuena, Johan Limonta, Adam Moore, and Travis Scott all had three hits in yesterday’s game. Limonta also drove in three runs in the game.

YOUR WINNING PITCHER: Nick Allen picked up his first win as a starter for the Rattlers. He gave up seven runs on nine hits over 5-2/3 innings for his fifth win of the year. The first four Swing batters of the game had hits and all four scored for a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.

WHO’S THE GUY AT SHORT? Ron Garth became only the third Timber Rattler to have started at shortstop this season. Jeff Dominguez (53 starts) and Robby Hudson (40) had been the only starters at short this season. Hudson had started the last 18 games in a row at short since the promotion of Dominguez to Inland Empire.

CLIMBING OUT: The Rattlers rallied from a 5-1 deficit after the top of the third inning. Wisconsin matched their biggest comeback of the season with the win yesterday. The Rattlers rallied from a 4-0 deficit after the top of the first to beat Dayton in the second game of a doubleheader on May 13 at Fox Cities Stadium.

OUT OF THE CELLAR: The Clinton LumberKings lost at Dayton yesterday and for the first time since June 25, they are out of last place in the Midwest League’s Western Division. The Rattlers had either been in eighth place or tied for seventh since June 26.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Tyler Norrick was a 6th round pick of the Cardinals in the 2006 draft out of Southern Illinois University. Norrick was drafted by Toronto in the 17th round of the 2005 draft, but returned to SIU and went 5-5 with a 4.44 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 77 innings. He made one relief appearance for the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League and picked up a win before being promoted to the Swing. In his last start, he beat Beloit on July 12. In that game, he allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts over 5-1/3 innings at John O’Donnell Stadium. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Mariners.
