Odds & Ends (7/13)

Triple-A Announces Championship Game (from BaseballAmerica.com):

TOLEDO, Ohio – The last time the International League and the Pacific Coast League met in the Triple-A World Series was in 2000.

But even though the contest had not been played in six years, the concept of a post-season championship between the two leagues never was left the minds of Triple-A administrators.

As a result, Triple-A Baseball will revive the post-playoff meeting between the champions of the two leagues starting this season. Triple-A administrators announced July 12 the creation of the "Bricktown Showdown" to be played at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Reaction: I like it. The winner take all format one game playoff is good. The neutral site is good. On first reading, I can't see anything major wrong with this idea. Nice job, Triple-A

If you are Rattler catcher Travis Scott, you can go home again (from Peoria-Journal-Star):

"I grew up going to Peoria Chiefs games at Pete Vonachen Stadium, and I played a few games here (at O'Brien) in high school. To be here and play in the Midwest League, it's even more exhilarating."

Taken in the 20th round in 2005 out of Lincoln Land junior college in Springfield, Scott was evaluated for the next year by the Mariners as a draft-and-follow pick. Scott had a full scholarship waiting at the University of New Orleans, but as the 2006 deadline approached Seattle signed Scott rather than letting him re-enter the draft in '06.

These next two have been out there for a few days, but I really don't like the ESPY's and after reading this, you probably won't either (deadspin.com):

NEW YORK, NY - To show their appreciation to the celebrity presenters and nominees at The 2006 ESPYS (Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN), ESPN has put together a one-of-a- kind Presenters’ and Nominees’ Gift Basket filled with exclusive luxury items created especially with this year’s recipients in mind.

The following is the list of gifts that each recipient will receive:

Under Armour An assortment of Under Armour apparel
ArchosA Gemini
402 Camcorder
DisneylandPark Hopper passes
Klipsch Audio The iGroove all-in-one digital music speaker system
SAMSONITE Black Label LuggageA
Pro-DLX carry-on upright
Edgetech “Pocket Surfer”
Pocket Surfer wireless Internet device that includes complimentary lifetime connection service...

That list goes on for awhile. To spare yourself actually watching the ESPY's click HERE. The Sports Blog at the Polo Grounds has pictures proving how bad it will be. Want proof? Ben Stiller can make me laugh...occasionally. Lance Armstrong is a legend in the sports world. Explain to me how this picture makes the legacy of either one better:

and if Bode Miller doesn't care how he does in the Olympics, how the heck is he supposed to care about baseball in the Can-Am League (The Big Picture)?

Miller signed a one-year deal with the Nashua (N.H.) Pride of the independent CanAm League Monday, which is about 27 steps away from actual baseball. The article does not mention what position Miller will play, but he seems like he'd be an Armando Benitez type -- a high-profile guy with a big salary, lots of blown saves and the hatred of the fans.
Good place to end that for now.
