May 22 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 1-0 as three Rattler pitchers combined on a one-hitter. Edward Paredes allowed one hit over eight innings for his third win in a row. Scott Robinson singled in the only run of the game in the top of the ninth inning. Rob Harmon got the final two outs of the game for his second save.

INTO THE EIGHTH: Paredes took a no-hitter into the bottom of the eighth inning. He retired the first two batters of the inning. Then, Anel De Los Santos singled on the first pitch of his at bat. That was the only hit of the game for the Kernels.

PAREDES: The Rattler lefty walked two, hit a batter, and struck out four as he set a career high for innings pitched with eight. In picking up his third win in his third straight start, Paredes retired 16 straight batters after Cody Collet’s walk in the third inning.

MATCHING ZEROES: Trevor Reckling, who allowed three runs in eight innings for a loss against the Rattlers on May 11, scattered five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings last night. Chris Armstrong retired all six batters he faced in two innings of relief.

*RATTLER’S NINTH SYMPHONY: Gavin Dickey doubled to start the top of the ninth against Esmerlin Jimenez. Alex Liddi’s grounder moved him over to third base. Robinson followed with an RBI single to center for the go-ahead run.

**CODA: Meyer walked the lead-off batter in the bottom of the ninth. The next batter dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run to second. Harmon got Jay Brossman to line out to centerfielder Maximo Mendez, who threw to second to double up the runner for the game-ending double play.

A LOT OF RECENT GOOSE EGGS: In the last 15 games the Timber Rattlers have played, there have been six shutouts: two for and four against. In the first 28 games of the season, there were three shutouts.

***COINCIDENCE? READ THE BOOK: The history book that is. On May 21, 2007, the Rattlers beat Kane County 1-0. One year later the Rattlers pick up another 1-0 win.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels are the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Kernels were 78-61 last season and made the Midwest League playoffs as the second half Western Division champions. They were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by the Clinton LumberKings. Keith Johnson is in his first year as Kernel manager.

SAME PLACE; NEW NAME: The Kernels still play at Veterans Memorial Stadium. But, they sold the naming rights this past off-season. This series will take place on Dale & Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

KERNELS IN 2008: Cedar Rapids is currently 20-25 and in sixth place in the Midwest League Western Division, 12.5 games behind division leading Clinton. The Kernels are 10-11 on Dale & Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cedar Rapids had lost five straight, including being swept by Clinton in a just completed three-game series in Cedar Rapids, before breaking the streak with the win on Monday.

THEY MIGHT BE GOING: The Kernels lead the Midwest League in stolen bases with 73. They also lead the league in attempts with 107.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .235 as a team and have scored 141 runs (3.2/game). Wisconsin has hit 11 home runs this season. The Timber Rattler pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.24. The Kernels are hitting .219 as a team and has scored 191 runs (4.2/game). Cedar Rapids has hit 22 homers. The Kernels have a combined ERA of 3.73.

2008 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers lead the series 4-3. The teams met on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium May 8-11 and the Rattlers went 3-1.

SEE YOU IN A FEW: The Rattlers and Kernels will meet again in Wisconsin's first road trip of the second half. The Rattlers will be back in Cedar Rapids June 23-26.

CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: Robert Fish was a 6th round pick of the Angels in the 2006 draft out of AB Miller High School in Fontana, California. He appeared in 16 games (15 starts) with the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League and was 3-4 with a 3.27ERA last season. He also made one start and took a loss for Rancho Cucamonga (California League) in 2007. Tonight is his first appearance against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, but he made his professional debut against the Arizona League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners in 2006. On July 13, he pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief with two walks and a strikeout. In his start prior to this evening for the Kernels, Fish was beaten by Clinton on May 17. He allowed seven runs on nine hits over five innings with six strikeouts.
