June 20, 2009: Game Notes

Most of tonight's game notes are the same as last night's game notes. Those may be found at this link.

Updated information is below:

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers and Kane County Cougars were rained out. The teams are playing a doubleheader tonight. This will be the sixth doubleheader of the season for the Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin has swept two twinbills, split two, and been swept in one this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are 39-28 and are in second place in the Western Division after Cedar Rapids beat Clinton last night to go to 40-28. The Kernels clinched a playoff spot with that win last night. The Cougars are 1-1/2 games up on the L-Kings for the Wild Card spot. The Cougars have three games left and the Clinton has two games left. Kane County’s magic number to clinch a playoff spot over the Clinton LumberKings is one.

GAME ONE KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: RHP Matt Fitts was the 16th round pick of the Athletics in the 2008 draft and was selected out of Lewis-Clark State College. Fitts was 13-0 with a 2.97ERA for the Warriors and was part of an NAIA Championship team. Fitts began his pro career with the Vancouver Canadians in the Northwest League and was 1-1 in 18 games (one start) with an ERA of 2.86. So far this season, Fitts has pitched in 13 games (eight starts) and is 2-5 with two saves. In his start prior to this evening, Fitts beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels on June 14 with six shutout innings. Fitts has faced neither the Timber Rattlers nor a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate in his pro career.

GAME TWO KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: LHP Anthony Capra was a fourth round pick of Oakland in the 2008 draft out of Wichita State University. In his final season with the Shockers, Capra was 9-1 in 15 games (14 starts) with a 3.54 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 76-1/3 innings pitched. In his first pro season, Capra was 4-3 with a 4.22ERA in 10 games (all starts) for the Cougars. In his start prior to this evening, Capra lost at Cedar Rapids. He went four innings, allowed three runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts on June 15. Capra has faced the Timber Rattlers twice this season. He is 0-1 and has allowed eight runs on 11 hits over 9-1/3 innings vs. Wisconsin this season. He pitched against the Timber Rattlers at Elfstrom Stadium on May 20 and took the loss. Wisconsin got to him for six runs on eight hits over 4-1/3 innings. Capra walked two and struck out six. On June 10 at Time Warner Cable Field, Capra got a no decision and gave up two runs on three hits with five walks over five innings.
