ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers and Kane County Cougars split a doubleheader. Wisconsin won game one 7-2. Kane County won game two 2-0.
GAME ONE RECAP: Wisconsin scored single runs in the first and second innings. They put the game away with a five run third inning to grab a 7-0 lead.
RELAY: Alex Periard made his second start as a Rattler in game one of the doubleheader. He pitched 3-2/3 innings and allowed one run on five hits. Liam Ohlmann got into the game in the fourth inning and retired the only batter he faced. Wily Peralta finished off the game and picked up the win for the Rattlers as he allowed one run on four hits and struck out four.
RATIOS: Periard had eight ground outs against one fly ball out in game one. In his time with the Rattlers, Periard has 13-4 ground out to fly out ratio. Peralta did not walk a batter in his action on Saturday and has a strikeout to walk ratio of 67:16.
EARLY AND OFTEN: The Rattlers took the lead in the first inning with a two-out RBI single by John Delaney. In the second, an RBI double by Juan Sanchez made the score 2-0. Jose Duran’s RBI double in the third opened the floodgates for Wisconsin. Michael Vass followed with a two-run single and later in the inning Corey Kemp knocked in a run with a single and John Delaney made it 7-1 with a run scoring fielder’s choice.
GAME TWO RECAP: The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and Anthony Capra made it stand for a 2-0 Cougars victory.
IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: The only base runners Capra allowed were on a second inning single by Brett Lawrie and a sixth inning single by Michael Vass. He struck out five in the game.
SWING THE BAT: The first two Cougars to face Timber Rattler starting pitcher Evan Frederickson bunted: Jason Christian for a leadoff single and Matt Ray for a sacrifice bunt. In his previous start, the Beloit Snappers had three consecutive bunt attempts in an inning off Frederickson. Beloit hitters collected two bunt singles and a sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning.
DIDN’T GO VERY FAR: The Bees scored two runs in the first inning without a ball leaving the infield. Christian went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning -- after two walks and a double steal put runners at second and third, an RBI grounder to third by Grant Desme knocked in the second Cougars run.
NICE TRIP: Vass is 10-for-17 on this current road trip.
GOOD STREAK: Lawrie is on a season-high, six-game hitting streak and is 8-for-20 during that stretch.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Wisconsin is closing out their first half schedule with an eight-game road trip. They are 3-2 with three games at Kane County June 20-21 left to be played.
FRESH START: The Rattlers begin the second half with an eight-game homestand against two teams that just missed the playoffs in the first half. Peoria, the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, is in for a four game set from June 25 through June 28. Clinton, the Midwest League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, wraps up the homestand with a series that begins on June 30 and ends on July 3.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are 40-29 and are tied with the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the Western Division lead with one game remaining in the firs half. The Cougars clinched at least a Wild Card playoff spot with their win in game two last night. If Kane County ties Cedar Rapids at the end of the first half, they will be the first half Western Division Champions because they hold the tiebreaker over the Kernels.
