ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Peoria Chiefs 4-1 in the second half opener for both teams.
OUT OF THE GATE: The Timber Rattlers scored three first inning runs off Peoria starting pitcher Justin Bristow. John Delaney singled in two runs with the bases loaded and Chris Dennis followed with an RBI single.
THAT’S THAT WITH THAT: The Rattlers ended a 21 inning scoreless streak with the runs scored on the Delaney single.
HE LIKES IT LIKE THAT: Delaney is now 2-for-5 with eight RBI with the bases loaded this season.
ADDING ON: Steve Braun doubled in a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the Rattlers lead to 4-0.
PERIARD’S DAY: Alex Periard started the game for the Rattlers and allowed one run on five hits over 4-2/3 innings. He left the game one out shy of qualifying for the win.
TYSON STAYS TOUGH: Rattler reliever Nick Tyson got the final out of the fifth inning with two runners on base. He retired the side in order in the sixth. Tyson has not allowed a run in 14-1/3 innings over 10 outings for the Rattlers this season.
SAVINGS PLAN: Dan Merklinger pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run. Merklinger earned his first save since 2007.
GETTING CLOSER: The win last night moved the Timber Rattlers back to within one game of the .500 mark at 35-36. The Rattlers have not been above .500 since April 24 when they were 7-6 after a win over the Chiefs at Miller Park.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Peoria Chiefs are the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. First year manager Marty Pevey led his team to a first half record of 38-31. The Chiefs put on a late charge at a playoff spot, but fell just short.
SEASON SERIES: The Timber Rattlers swept a four game series from the Chiefs in April. The Rattlers won by scores of 3-2, 7-6, and 8-7 at Time Warner Cable Field. Wisconsin also won the Border Battle at Miller Park by a score of 5-3. Wisconsin is 5-0 against the Chiefs in 2009
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .247 as a team. They have scored 300 runs (4.2/game) and hit 35 home runs. The Chiefs are hitting .268 as a team. They have scored 318 runs (4.5/game) and hit 55 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 3.94 while allowing a total of 323 runs (4.5/game). Peoria pitchers have a team ERA of 3.75 while allowing 291 runs (4.2/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 83 errors. The Chief defense has committed 79 errors. Wisconsin is 22-15 at home this season. Peoria is 13-22 on the road in 2009.

HEY, ISN’T YOUR DAD…? Peoria catcher Michael Brenly is the son former Major league catcher and manager Bob Brenly. Brenly currently is a television analyst for the Chicago Cubs.
PEORIA STARTING PITCHER: RHP Chris Archer was the 5th round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the 2006 draft out of Clayton (NC) high school. He joined the Chicago Cubs organization – along with two other minor leaguers -- in a trade that sent Mark DeRosa to the Indians in December of 2008. Archer spent all of 2008 with the Lake County Captains of the South Atlantic League. He was 4-8 in 27 starts with an ERA of 4.29. He walked 84 and struck out 106 in 115-1/3 innings pitched. So far this season, Archer is 2-2 with a 2.42 ERA in 13 starts. Archer has made a start against the Timber Rattlers in the first game of a doubleheader on April 23. He allowed two runs on three hits over four innings for a no decision.
