ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Lugnuts 3-0. Paul Fagan pitched seven innings and gave up three hits with five strikeouts and no walks for the win. The Rattlers took advantage of a pair of Lugnut errors to score two unearned runs. Juan Colon and Austin Bibens-Dirkx each worked a scoreless frame out of the bullpen.
IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME: Yesterday was just the second shutout tossed by the Rattler pitching staff this season. The last shutout for the Rattler staff was a 4-0 win at Kane County on May 16.
ZERO-SUM GAME: No walks were issued by any of the three Timber Rattler pitchers yesterday.
TOUGH SPOT: Fagan had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the fourth inning after a single and an error. Wisconsin led 2-0 at the time. Fagan got out of the jam by striking out Joey Metropoulos and Brian Pettway for the final two outs of the inning.
BEHIND THE PLATE: Adam Moore got the start as the catcher for the Rattlers on Sunday. He became the seventh different starting catcher Wisconsin has had this season. They have been: JB Tucker (32 games), Nick Prosise (26), Travis Scott (10), Chao Kuan Wu (10), Curtis Ledbetter (7), Brian Schweiger (2), Moore (1)
MAKING HIS DEBUT: Colon made his inaugural appearance as a Rattler yesterday. He gave up a pair of hits and no runs in the eighth inning.
BACK ON THE HORSE: Bibens-Dirkx blew his first save opportunity as a Rattler by allowing a pair of ninth inning runs at Southwest Michigan on July 3. He picked up his first Rattler save with a scoreless ninth inning on Sunday.
BACK-TO-BACK WINS: The Rattlers have won two straight games for the first time this half with their last two victories over the Lugnuts. The last time Wisconsin had a winning streak was when they reeled off five straight from June 2 through game one of a doubleheader on June 7.
SUNDAY WAS A FUN-DAY: The Rattlers picked up their third Sunday win of the season yesterday. Wisconsin had lost four straight Sunday games since they beat Clinton on June 4 at Fox Cities Stadium.
OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Aaron Tressler was the 32nd round pick of the Blue Jays in the 2004 draft out of Penn State. Tressler spent time with the Lugnuts, Auburn (New York-Penn), and Dunedin (Florida State) in 2005. He made seventeen relief appearances for Lansing and was 3-1 with a 2.06ERA and two saves. He made one appearance against the Rattlers last season and earned a save with 3-2/3 innings of scoreless work on August 20 at Fox Cities Stadium. Tressler beat the Rattlers at Lansing on June 13 as a starter as he struck out seven and allowed two runs on five hits over six innings. The West Michigan Whitecaps beat Tressler in his last start. On July 5, West Michigan got to him for four runs on eight hits over 5-2/3 innings.
