Game Notes for 7/8

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Timber Rattlers 6-0. Lansing expanded their lead from 1-0 to 6-0 with a five run sixth inning. Jacob Butler hit a two run homer off reliever Edgar Guaramato and Sean Shoffit delivered a two-out, two-run single off Lance Beus later in the decisive inning. Wisconsin managed just two hits and lost for the ninth straight time.

LOTS OF FANS: Lansing starting pitcher Chi-Hung Cheng pitched seven shutout inning and struck out ten batters. Randy Dicken pitched the final two innings and struck out four. Fourteen strikeouts are the most times this season Rattler hitters have been K’ed.

TWO HITS? Ron Garth singled in the fourth inning. Johan Limonta had the only other hit on the night, an infield single in the fifth.

CAUGHT STEALING: Michael Saunders was caught trying to steal third in the fourth inning. Wisconsin is 3-for-13 in stolen base attempts in the second half of the season.

STARTING PITCHING: Wisconsin starter Jose Escalona gave up five hits and walked five, but only allowed one run in four innings last night.

SHORT STINT: Guaramato did not retire any of the five batters he faced last night. It was also the third time this season, he has allowed four or more runs in an outing of one inning or less.

SEASON LONG LOSING STREAK: The loss last night extended the current Rattler losing streak to nine games. Wisconsin’s record has also fallen to a season low twenty-eight games under .500 (29-57).

APPROACHING HISTORY: The longest losing streak in Timber Rattler history was in 2002. That team had a twelve game skid from July 1-14. That team started the second half 2-20. That 2002 squad has the worst record in Timber Rattler history. They finished the season 53-86.

OFFENSIVE: The Rattlers have not scored more than four runs in any of the games in this losing streak. Only once in the first sixteen games of this half have the Rattlers scored more than four runs, in a 5-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs at Fox Cities Stadium on June 28. Wisconsin has scored four or fewer runs in sixty games this season.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Kristian Bell was an 11th round pick out of Blinn College in the 2004 draft by the Blue Jays. Bell pitched two seasons for Auburn in the New York-Penn League before beginning this season with the Lugnuts. Bell beat the Rattlers on June 11 at Oldsmobile Park. In that game, Bell walked four and gave up four hits over six innings, but the Rattlers scored three runs (two earned) and the Lugnuts won 7-4. In his last start for Lansing, Bell got a no decision against West Michigan on July 3 in a 10-8 Whitecap win. Bell allowed five runs on eight hits over 5-1/3 innings with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
