Game Notes for 7/9

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers ended their season long nine game losing streak with an 8-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts. Robby Hudson was 4-for-4 with a home run. Alex Gary also homered for the Rattlers. Harold Williams and Brian Kappel combined for four innings of scoreless relief to preserve the win for Marwin Vega.

FOUR! Hudson became the third Rattler to record a 4-hit game this season. Ron Garth has a pair of four hits games this season. Jeffery Dominguez has the other. Hudson also hit his second professional home run last night.

BREAKING ANOTHER STREAK: Gary’s home run ended an 0-for-19 slide for him. His last hit was also a home run, a solo shot in Southwest Michigan on July 3.

BACK-TO-BACK BLASTS: Gary started the bottom of the eighth inning with a homer and Hudson followed with his. That was the first time this season Wisconsin has hit consecutive home runs.

AND THE WINNER IS…: Vega got the win for the Rattlers. He was the winning pitcher in the last win for Wisconsin before the nine game losing streak started.

GETTING OFFENSIVE: The Rattlers scored the most runs in a game in the second half by putting up eight last night. Last night was the twenty-seventh time Wisconsin has scored more at least five runs in a game. The Rattlers are 20-7 when they get five or more runs in a game.

R-E-L-I-E-F: Williams gave up one hit and struck out four over three scoreless innings out of the Rattler bullpen. The Midwest League leader in walks issued handed out just one free pass.

SAVING THE DAY: Last night, Brian Kappel recorded a save in his first appearance as a Timber Rattler with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The former Princeton Tiger had five saves at Everett in the Northwest League before getting promoted to the Rattlers on Saturday.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Casey McKenzie was a 27th round pick of the Blue Jays in the 2004 draft out of the University of Tampa. Last season with Auburn in the New York-Penn League, McKenzie was 5-4 with a 3.78ERA in fifteen starts. McKenzie started the 2006 season with the Doubledays and was 1-0 in two starts with an ERA of 1.84. His last appearance for the Lugnuts was his first start for them. He went 6-2/3 innings against West Michigan with three runs (two earned) on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts for a no decision. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
