The '57 Milwaukee Braves began a brief two game series with the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field on May 5. The Braves were 12-3 heading into this game, but only had a one game lead on the 11-4 Dodgers.
That lead would be up to two games after a 10-7 comeback win.
Milwaukee got two runs in the first. Danny O'Connell singled. Hank Aaron followed with a single to center and Duke Snider committed an error that allowed O'Connell and Aaron to score on the play.
But Bob Buhl was chased from the game in the first inning. The Dodgers scored five runs and Buhl was gone after just 2/3 of an inning. First, Buhl committed an error that allowed a run to score. Carl Furillo singled. Then, Gil Hodges singled in a run. Roy Campanella drilled a three run homer and the Dodgers were up 5-2.
Eddie Mathews had an RBI single in the third to get the Braves close, but Brooklyn scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Pinch hitter Elmo Valo and Gino Cimoli had RBI singles for a 7-3 lead.
The Braves started their comeback in the top of the fourth. Aaron blasted a two-out, three run homer. The home run was the sixth of the season for Hammerin' Hank.
In the fifth, Billy Bruton's sac fly tied the game. With Johnny Logan on first base, Del Crandall was walked intentionally to get to reliever Ernie Johnson. Johnson foiled the strategy and singled in Logan with the go ahead run. O'Connell was next and his RBI single knocked in Crandall for a 9-7 lead.
Aaron scored the final run for the Braves, when he crossed the plate after a Sandy Koufax wild pitch.
Johnson was the winning pitcher for the Braves with six innings of one-hit, shutout relief. But, Aaron was the man for Milwaukee. He was 4-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored.
