Kyle Parker wasn't too happy this spring when the Seattle organization told the right-hander he was staying behind in extended spring training to work his mechanics.
But Parker is all smiles now as his problems appear more than fixed, and he threw 5 1/3 no-hit innings as he and Wisconsin blanked visiting Kane County, 1-0, on Monday.
Parker retired the first nine Cougars hitters until Michael Massaro reached on shortstop Ogui Diaz's fielding error. But Massaro was erased on a double play and Parker sat down the next five in a row until Christian Vitters singled to left with one out in the sixth frame.
"Every inning I'm just trying to throw strikes and jump ahead early," said the 22-year-old Parker, drafted last year by the Mariners in the 24th round out of the University of Washington. "The coaches have been talking to us about getting the starters deeper into games and saving the bullpen." Parker (2-1) lasted 7 1/3 frames, allowing three hits and striking out six without walking a batter -- lowering his ERA to 1.35.
