Game Notes -- 5/23

Please, take note of the transactions at the bottom of the post today.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Cougars 6-5 at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Carlos Peguero and Greg Halman both homered for Wisconsin. Nathan Adcock pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) for his first professional win. Andrew Barb allowed two runs in the top of the ninth, but got the final out for his seventh save.

FIRST TIME: Adcock gave up six hits, walked two, hit two batters, threw a pair of wild pitches, and struck out four for the victory. It was his first win since signing with the Mariners. He had been 0-3 with the Rattlers this season before the ‘W’ last night.

FIRST TIME (PT II): Last night was the first time this season Wisconsin got a win in which they allowed five or more runs. Wisconsin is 1-19 when that happens.

FIRST TIME (PT III): Peguero’s homer was his first of the season for the Rattlers. It was his first home run since August 27, 2006 as a member of the Everett AquaSox.

SECOND TIME: Halman’s homer in the bottom of the fourth inning was his fourth homer of the season. He has homered in two straight games.

THIRD TIME: Adcock made the third straight quality start for the Rattlers. Chris Tillman and Kyle Parker had the first two quality starts in the string.

THIRD TIME (PT II): The Rattlers are on a two game winning streak. This is the third time this season Wisconsin has won two straight games. The Rattlers have not won three straight games this season.

FOUR! Carlos Triunfel reached base four times last night. He doubled, singled twice, and was hit by a pitch.

SPLIT SIX: The Rattlers went 3-3 in their just-ended six-game home stand.

SEVENTH HEAVEN: Barb allowed a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to snap a streak of 7-1/3 scoreless innings. But, he preserved the lead and is 7-for-7 in save opportunities.

AROUND THE MWL IN EIGHT DAYS: The Rattlers are beginning an eight-day, nine-game, three-city trip through the Midwest League. After the two games in Kane County, the Rattlers head to Peoria for five games against the Chiefs. The road trip ends in Burlington with a pair of games.

ROSTER MOVES: The Timber Rattlers are receiving a pair of relief pitchers from the High Desert Mavericks, Seattle’s California League affiliate, today. Brian Kappel, a member of the 2006 Timber Rattlers, was 2-1 with a 5.06ERA for the Mavericks this season. Lefty Mike Wagner appeared in one game for Tacoma, the M’s Pacific Coast League team, in April and one for the Mavericks on May 19. Both will be arriving at the ballpark tonight and will be available. Timber Rattler starting pitcher Chris Tillman has been promoted to High Desert. Tillman was 1-4 with 3.55ERA in eight Midwest League starts. Rattler closer Andrew Barb has been placed on the temporarily inactive list.

OPPOSING STARTER: John Herrera was the 10th round pick of the Athletics of the 2005 draft out of Lubbock Christian University. Herrera was 3-1 with three saves and a 3.90 ERA in 39 games (one start) for the Cougars last season. He faced the Timber Rattlers twice in relief last season. Over 2-2/3 innings, he allowed two hits and one run (unearned) with two walks and three strikeouts. Herrera has been a starter for the Cougars in 2007 and tonight will be his ninth start of the season. He has lost his last two games. In his last start, the Great Lakes Loons got to Herrera for four runs on seven hits over 5-2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out one in that game.
