May 18 Game Notes

ABOUT SATURDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Kane County Cougars 4-2 with a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Liddi tied the game with a two-out RBI single. Scott Robinson launched a game-winning home run shortly after Liddi’s hit. Jake Wild got the win with two innings of scoreless relief. The win was the fifth in a row for the Rattlers.

HERE’S TO YOU, MR. ROBINSON: Robinson had two of Wisconsin’s five hits in the game. The Rattlers trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning and Robinson started the inning with a double. He would eventually score on a wild pitch. The homer in the ninth was his second of the season and his first in Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

FIRST SINCE: That last game-ending homer for the Rattlers was Andy Hargrove’s two-run blast to beat Peoria in the second game of a doubleheader on May 13, 2007.

CAN’T GET THERE WITHOUT THIS: Liddi just got a piece of a 2-2 pitch from Kane County closer Justin Friend to keep his at bat alive. Liddi singled on the next pitch to drive in the tying run.

*ADCOCK SHOWS HIS QUALITY: Timber Rattler starting pitcher Nathan Adcock allowed single runs in the first two innings and saw his scoreless inning streak end at 17-2/3. But, he kept the Cougars off the board in his final five innings to record his third straight quality start. Adcock had five quality starts in his eight starts this season.

**A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS: The Rattler defense turned three double plays behind Adcock. Also, centerfielder Maximo Mendez threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double.

***S-A-T-U-R-D-AY! The Timber Rattlers are 7-1 on Saturdays this season.

****HIGH FIVE: This is the first five-game winning streak for the Rattlers since they won five straight June 1-5 in 2006.

LEVEL: The Rattlers are 19-19 after the win yesterday. This is the first time they have been at .500 since they were 3-3 after winning game one of a doubleheader against Dayton on April 13.

HOME COOKING: The Rattlers are 8-2 in the first ten games of this 11-game homestand. Wisconsin is now 12-10 at home this season.

THE ROAD AHEAD: Wisconsin embarks on a 12-game, 13-day road trip to Cedar Rapids, Peoria, and Kane County tomorrow. They will return home for an eight-game homestand June 1-8 against Peoria and Quad Cities.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Last season, the Cougars finished the season 63-76 and missed the playoffs. Kane County was 24-45 in the first half and 39-31 in the second half. Manger Aaron Nieckula is back for his third season at the helm of Kane County.

COUGARS IN 2008: Kane County is 25-14 and in second place in the Midwest League Western Division. They trail first place Clinton by 3.5 games. The Cougars are 14-6 in road games this season. In their most recent series, the Cougars took three out of four games from the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Elfstrom Stadium.

SEE YOU SOON; SEE YOU REAL SOON: Wisconsin heads to Kane County for a series May 28-31.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .242 as a team and have scored 134 runs (3.5/game). Wisconsin has hit 10 home runs this season. The Timber Rattler pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.28. Kane County is hitting .256 as a team and has scored 174 runs (4.5/game). The Cougars have hit 21 homers this season. The Kane County pitching staff has an ERA of 2.50.

KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: Scott Mitchinson was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent out of Australia in 2003. The Athletics selected him in the Triple-A portion of the 2007 Rule 5 Draft. He made three stops in the Philadelphia system last season: Gulf Coast, Williamsport (New York-Penn), and Lakewood (South Atlantic). In eight starts for Lakewood, Mitchinson was 3-3 with a 4.12ERA and struck out 50 batters while walking 14 in 43-2/3 innings. In his last start for Kane County, Mitchinson was a tough-luck loser as he allowed one run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over seven innings on May 13 against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Cougars lost that game 2-0. Mitchinson has pitched internationally for Australia, most recently in the Olympic qualifying tournament in March. Mitchinson also pitched for Australia in the 2007 World Cup in Taiwan. He faced a Canadian team that had former Rattlers Michael Saunders and Sebastien Boucher in a game on November 14, but was not involved in the decision, a 7-6 win for Australia. Rattler pitcher Phillippe Aumont, who pitched for Canada in the same tournament, did not appear in that game.
