June 9 Game Notes

LAST ACTION: The Timber Rattlers beat the Quad Cities River Bandits 6-5 in 11 innings. Blake Ochoa singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning on Friday night. The win was Wisconsin’s fifth straight.

WHAT HAS HAPPENENED SINCE: The Rattlers and the River Bandits started playing on Saturday night. Quad Cities scored six times in the first inning off Rattler starting pitcher Nathan Adcock. Wisconsin scored once in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 6-1 through the end of the third inning. Just as the bottom of the third ended, *a hard rain started to fall as **lightning crashed around the ballpark. The game was not resumed on Saturday.

SUNDAY, RAINY SUNDAY: The plan was to conclude Saturday’s suspended game on Sunday afternoon and have the two teams play a seven-inning game at the end of that to finish the series. But, ***no one stopped the rain.

CLEAN SLATE: None of the stats from the first three innings of Saturday’s game will be included in the season stats. River Bandit outfielder Charlie Kingrey loses a three run homer. Adcock does not get charged with six runs (four earned) over his 1/3 of an inning.

HOW MANY? The Rattlers have had eight home dates rained out in 2008.

HALF WAY POINT: The two rainouts concluded the first half of the 2008 home schedule for the Rattlers. Wisconsin had nine rainouts all of 2007.

PERSPECTIVE: The River Bandits have lost six home dates to the weather. The Peoria Chiefs have lost five home games to weather. Only the Fort Wayne Wizards have not lost a home game to the weather in 2008.

ROSTER MOVES: On Sunday, Rattler first baseman/designated hitter Scott Robinson retired. Robinson hit .190 with two homers and six RBI in 26 games with the Timber Rattlers. Pitcher Donnie Hume was transferred from the roster of the Everett Aquasox to give Wisconsin 25 players on their active roster.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD: The Rattlers are 17-12 at home, but 10-18 on the road. Wisconsin begins a 7-day, 9-game series tonight. There is a four game series with the Bees followed with a pair of doubleheaders and a single game June 13-15 at Clinton.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Burlington Bees are the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. They are currently 25-38 and in eighth place in the Midwest League Western Division. The Bees have lost four in a row and are 9-20 in 29 home games this season.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .239 as a team and have scored 194 runs (3.4/game). Wisconsin has hit 14 home runs this season. The Timber Rattler pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.26. The Bees are hitting .229 as a team and have scored 224 runs (3.6/game). Burlington has hit 41 home runs this season. The Bees pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.64.

2007 SEASON SERIES: Burlington won the season series with Wisconsin last year. The Rattlers went 3-5 in eight games with the Bees. Wisconsin was 1-4 at Community Field.

2008 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers took three out of four games from the Bees on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium May 12-15. The Bees won the first game of the series 1-0 in ten innings. The Rattlers won the final three games of the series: 6-4, 3-1, and 7-2.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook has placed five current Burlington Bees on their list of the top 30 prospects in the Kansas City organization. Shortstop Mike Moustakas is rated number one on the list. Pitcher Matt Mitchell is ranked at number nine. Pitchers Danny Duffy and Sam Runion are on the list at #6 and #12 respectively. Outfielder David Lough is on the list at #22. Pitcher Brett Fisher is on the Burlington disabled list and is ranked #19 by BA.

OUT OF THE DRAFT: The Bees have 11 members of their current roster who were members of the Kansas City draft class in 2007. Moustakas, a high school shortstop out of Chatsworth, California, was the second overall pick in the draft. Runion (2nd), Daniel Duffy (3rd) and outfielder Adrian Ortiz (5th) are the other three top ten picks on the Burlington roster. Other ’07 draftees include: Pitchers Alex Cegarra (13th), and Matt Mitchell (14th); catcher Ryan Eigisti (15th); infielders Clint Robinson (25th) and Kyle Martin (29th); and outfielders David Lough (11th) and Wilson Tucker (33rd).

BURLINGTON STARTING PITCHER: Daniel Duffy was a 3rd round pick of the Royals in the 2007 draft out of Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, California. In his first professional season, Duffy went 2-3 with a 1.45ERA in 11 games (nine starts) for the Arizona League affiliate of the Royals. In his last appearance before tonight, Duffy picked up his first Midwest League win as he beat Clinton at Community Field. He allowed one hit and walked three with three strikeouts over 5-1/3 shutout innings. Tonight is Duffy’s first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. He faced the Arizona League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners one time in 2007. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in a three inning relief stint.
