Midwest League Action (7/21)

July 21 scoreboard.

Wisconsin 12, @Beloit 6: The Beloit Snappers were feeling pretty good after scoring three runs in the first inning against Wisconsin Monday afternoon. Those good feelings evaporated quickly.

@Peoria 7, Great Lakes 1: Good teams take advantage of whatever little piece an opponent gives them. Right now, in first place in the Midwest League's Western Division, the Peoria Chiefs are a good team.

@Kane County 9, Lansing 8 (10 innings): “If we don't score there, we see the debut of [left fielder] Adam Klein,” Cougars manager Aaron Nieckula said. “We were out of pitching.”

South Bend 6, @Cedar Rapids 5: This one could be tough to recover from.

Dayton 8, @Clinton 4: “Yesterday we didn’t have a legitimate starter and today with Main being out, the release of Romero and the other three guys we have with the bullpen being short 15 innings.

Fort Wayne 1, @Quad Cities 0: One mistake Monday night took the shine off one of the sharpest starts of the season by Quad-Cities pitcher Nick Additon.

West Michigan @ Burlington: This may be the best story about a rain out....ever. Well done, Susan.
The Burlington Bees and West Michigan Whitecaps had a long night Monday at Community Field, yet only played a couple of innings.

The Bees led 3-1 with one runner on and two outs in the second inning when torrential rain chased the players from the field at 7:41 p.m.

The tarp was taken off the field, and the staff worked on drying off the field -- especially the warning track and bullpen areas. More than two hours later, the players and hard-core fans who weathered the storm were still waiting on a decision on whether or not the game would be continued.

The discussion became animated around 10 when the managers, coaches and umpires met at home plate. Each manager and an umpire eventually spoke by phone to Midwest League president George Spelius. And after even more discussion, the decision was made to cancel the game.
