ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers defeated Beloit 3-1. Evan Frederickson allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four over six innings and got the win. Wily Peralta worked the final three innings and struck out six for the save.
LET’S GET OFFENSIVE: The Rattlers broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Corey Kemp doubled and scored on a double by Chris Dennis. Michael Vass drove in Dennis later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
A SOLO SHOT: Ozzie Lewis homered in the top of the fifth inning off Frederickson for the only Beloit run.
ESCAPE: Beloit had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Frederickson struck out Ramon Santana and Michael Harrington to get out of the inning.
A LITTLE INSURANCE: Kemp singled in Juan Sanchez in the top of the seventh for a 3-1 lead. Kemp had three hits in the game and raised his average to .308.
IN CONTROL: Frederickson and Peralta combined for 10 strikeouts and neither pitcher walked a batter in the game.
SAVE THE DATE: Peralta allowed four hits over three scoreless innings for his first Midwest League save. Peralta had a pair of saves with the Helena Brewers in 2008.
A LITTLE RARE: Timber Rattlers pitchers have 19 saves this season. Jim Henderson leads the team with 14. Peralta is the fifth pitcher on the Wisconsin staff with one save.
ALMOST PERFECT: The Rattlers committed one error last night. It was the only error of the four game series for the Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin has only committed two errors in the first eight games of the current homestand.
QUICK DRAW McCRAW: Rattler catcher Sean McCraw threw out three Snappers who were trying to steal second in last night’s game. He is tied for fourth place amongst Midwest League catchers in throwing out would be base stealers at .333. The Midwest League average for catchers throwing out opposing base stealers is .308.
HOMESTAND: The Rattlers are in the midst of a 12-game home stand. They are 3-5 in the first eight games. Wisconsin hosts Kane County from June 10 through June 13 to wrap up the home schedule in the first half.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are 36-22 and in first place in the Midwest League Western Division. The Cougars have a two game lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels and are five games up on Peoria and Clinton for the Wild Card Spot. There are 12 games remaining in the first half. Kane County is currently on a three game winning streak and took three out of four games from the Chiefs in a home series.
SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers were 1-2 in a three game series at Elfstrom Stadium from May 20-22. The Rattlers won game one 7-5, but the Cougars won the final two games by scored of 7-6 and 6-3.
PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook listed two members of the current Kane County roster on their list of top 30 Oakland prospects. Shortstop Dusty Coleman is ranked at # 22 and outfielder Grant Desme checks in at #30.
OUT OF THE DRAFT 2008: The Athletics have placed 14 members of their 2008 draft class on the current Kane County roster. The picks from the top 10 rounds are: Catcher Petey Paramore (3rd), pitcher Anthony Capra (4th), infielder Jason Christian (5th), pitcher Brett Hunter (7th), and outfielder Jeremy Barfield (8th). Other current Cougars from the ’08 draft are: Pitchers Trey Barham (25th), Matt Fitts (16th), Mike Hart (19th), Shawn Haviland (33rd), Justin Murray (29th), Kenny Smalley (24th), and Mickey Storey (31st). Coleman (28th) and outfielder Chris Berroa (11th) were also ’08 draft picks.
RETURNING ALUMNI: There are 10 current Cougars who spent time in Kane County last season. Pitchers Capra, Scott Deal, Brett Hunter, and Jamie Richmond; catchers Paramore and Juan Nunez; and infielders Carlos Arrieche, Christian, Dusty Napoleon, and Matt Ray all wore a Cougar jersey in 2008.
THEY ARE FAMILY: Kane County outfielder Jeremy Barfield is the son of former major league outfielder Jesse Barfield. His brother Josh Barfield played is currently playing for the Cleveland Indians. Josh Barfield played for the Fort Wayne Wizards in 2002.
KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: LHP Anthony Capra was a fourth round pick of Oakland in the 2008 draft out of Wichita State University. He is 1-3 with a 4.05 ERA in 10 starts for the Cougars in 2009. In his final season with the Shockers, Capra was 9-1 in 15 games (14 starts) with a 3.54 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 76-1/3 innings pitched. In his first pro season, Capra was 4-3 with a 4.22ERA in 10 games (all starts) for the Cougars. He allowed 48 hits and 22 walks with 39 strikeouts over 49 innings for Kane County. In his start prior to this evening, Capra allowed one run on two hits at Clinton on June 5. He walked five and struck out six over six innings for a no decision. Capra pitched against the Timber Rattlers at Elfstrom Stadium on May 20 and took the loss. Wisconsin got to him for six runs on eight hits over 4-1/3 innings. Capra walked two and struck out six.
