June 12, 2009: Game notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Cougars 7-3. John Delaney and Juan Sanchez both had a pair of RBI and Jose Duran had three hits to bring the Rattlers back from an early 3-0 deficit. Daniel Meadows pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen and picked up his tenth win of the season.

ROUGH FIRST: Last night, Cody Adams made his first appearance since a start at Beloit on May 25. He pitched one inning against the Cougars and gave up three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He escaped more damage by getting an inning ending 4-6-3 double play with runners at first and second.

TWO IS COINCIDENCE: Kane County scored three runs in the first inning last night. They also scored three runs in the first inning on Wednesday night.

COMEBACK! The Rattlers scored four times in the bottom of the first inning off Shawn Haviland. Corey Kemp singled in the first run. A walk and an error loaded the bases for Delaney and he smacked a two-run double to left. An infield single by Edgar Trejo later in the inning put Wisconsin up 4-3.

MEADOWS’ LAND: Meadows relieved Adams to start the top of the second inning. He allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out four over his five shutout innings to keep the Rattlers in front.

THE VIEW FROM UP HERE: Meadows is the only minor league pitcher – at any level – with 10 wins. Only one other professional pitcher has ten victories this season – Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays. Halladay goes for win #11 tonight against the Florida Marlins at Rogers Centre.

YER OUT! Kemp threw out Jason Christian on an attempted stolen base in the top of the seventh. That was only the second time in 19 attempts that Christian has been caught stealing.

ADDING ON: Brock Kjeldgaard doubled in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and Jose Duran added a two-run double in the eighth to provide the Rattlers with their winning margin.

MORE ZEROES: Liam Ohlmann pitched two scoreless innings and Jim Henderson added a scoreless ninth out of the Rattler bullpen. Timber Rattler relievers pitched eight shutout innings last night against the Cougars. . In the last three games – all Wisconsin wins -- the Timber Rattlers relief corps has pitched 13-1/3 innings and has not allowed a run.

HOMESTAND: The Rattlers are nearing the end of a 12-game home stand. They are 5-5 in the first ten games. Wisconsin hosts Kane County tonight through June 13 to wrap up the home schedule in the first half.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are 36-24 and in first place in the Midwest League Western Division. The Cougars have a one game lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels and are three games up on Clinton for the Wild Card Spot. There are 10 games remaining in the first half.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .248 as a team. They have scored 257 runs (4.3/game) and have hit 34 home runs. The Cougars are hitting .259 as a team. They have scored 317 runs (5.3/game) and hit 49 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a staff ERA of 4.15 and have allowed 284 runs (4.7/game). Kane County pitchers have an ERA of 3.67 and have allowed 253 runs (4.2/game). The Timber Rattlers defense has committed 75 errors. The Cougars defense has committed 70 errors. Wisconsin is 20-14 at home. Kane County is 15-14 on the road.

SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers lead the season series 3-2 through five games. The Rattlers were 1-2 in a three game series at Elfstrom Stadium from May 20-22. The Rattlers won game one 7-5, but the Cougars won the final two games by scored of 7-6 and 6-3.

ALL-STARS: Kane County placed seven players on the Western Division squad for the upcoming Midwest League All-Star Game. Four Cougars will start for the West: First baseman Steve Kleen, shortstop Dusty Coleman, third baseman Jason Christian, and designated hitter Jeremy Barfield. Three Kane County pitchers also made the team: Starters Shawn Haviland and Kenny Smalley and reliever Jamie Richmond.

KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: LHP Pedro Figueroa was signed by the Athletics as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2003. He has pitching in the Dominican Summer League, the Arizona League, and the Northwest League before joining the Cougars this season. Last season with Vancouver, Figueroa was 2-5 with a 3.93 ERA in 15 appearances. He is 5-2 with a 3.99ERA in 11 starts for the Cougars this season. In his start prior to this evening, Figueroa pitched seven shutout innings, allowed four hits, and struck out six to beat Peoria at home on June 7. Figueroa has beaten the Timber Rattlers in his only appearance against them. On May 22, Figueroa pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits for the win at Elfstrom Stadium.
