June 13, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Kane County Cougars defeated the Timber Rattlers 2-1. Pedro Figueroa pitched six innings and allowed one unearned run for his sixth win of the season.

FIRST OUT OF THE GATE: Last night, the Rattlers scored first for the first time in the series. A throwing error by third baseman Carlos Arrieche allowed a run to score in the second inning.

BACK TO EVEN: The Cougars tied the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Jason Christian.

OUT FRONT: Kane County scored the go ahead run in the top of the fourth inning on a wild pitch.

LACK OF CONTROL: Rattler starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta gave up a single to Steve Kleen with one out in the top of the third. Scarpetta threw three wild pitches in the inning to allow Kleen to come around to score the go ahead run.

NOT FOR LACK OF CHANCES: The Rattlers were not retired in order in any inning last night. Wisconsin had two runners on base at the same time in five innings. Wisconsin left 11 runners on base last night.

TWIN KILLINGS: Kane County turned three inning ending double plays last night all with Figueroa on the hill. The Cougars got a 6-4-3 double play in the third, a 3-6-1 double play in the fourth, and another 6-4-3 double play in the sixth.

MORE ZEROES: Efrain Nieves and Rigoberto Almonte combined to pitch four scoreless innings. In the last four games, the Timber Rattlers relief corps has pitched 17-1/3 innings and has not allowed a run.

HOMESTAND: The Rattlers are at the end of a 12-game home stand. They are 5-6 in the first eleven games. Wisconsin hosts Kane County tonight through June 13 to wrap up the home schedule in the first half. Wisconsin is on the road for an eight game trip to end the first half. The Rattlers are in Burlington from June 14-17 and in Kane County from June 18-21.

RETURNING HOME: The Rattlers will be home for an eight-game, nine-day homestand to start the second half. The Peoria Chiefs will visit from June 25-28. Then, the Clinton LumberKings are at Time Warner Cable Field from June 30 to July 3.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are 37-24 and in first place in the Midwest League Western Division. The Cougars have a two game lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels and are three games up on Clinton for the Wild Card Spot. There are nine games remaining in the first half.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .248 as a team. They have scored 258 runs (4.2/game) and have hit 34 home runs. The Cougars are hitting .258 as a team. They have scored 319 runs (5.2/game) and hit 49 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a staff ERA of 4.11 and have allowed 286 runs (4.7/game). Kane County pitchers have an ERA of 3.61 and have allowed 254 runs (4.2/game). The Timber Rattlers defense has committed 75 errors. The Cougars defense has committed 71 errors. Wisconsin is 20-15 at home. Kane County is 16-14 on the road.

SEASON SERIES: Both teams have won three games through the first six games of the season series. The Rattlers were 1-2 in a three game series at Elfstrom Stadium from May 20-22. The Rattlers won game one 7-5, but the Cougars won the final two games by scored of 7-6 and 6-3.

ALL-STARS: Kane County placed seven players on the Western Division squad for the upcoming Midwest League All-Star Game. Four Cougars will start for the West: First baseman Steve Kleen, shortstop Dusty Coleman, third baseman Jason Christian, and designated hitter Jeremy Barfield. Three Kane County pitchers also made the team: Starters Shawn Haviland and Kenny Smalley and reliever Jamie Richmond.

KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: RHP Kenny Smalley was the 24th round pick of the Athletics in the 2008 draft out of Delta State University. In his first pro season, Smalley was 5-1 with a save and a 3.07ERA in 20 relief appearances with the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. Smalley is 6-1 with the Cougars this year. He has a 2.03 ERA in 14 games (six starts), has won five consecutive decisions, and is 3-0 as a starter. In his start prior to this evening, Smalley beat the Peoria Chiefs on June 8. In that game, he allowed three runs on five hits over six innings. Tonight is the first time he will face the Rattlers and the first time he will face an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
