June 3, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers lost 1-0 to Cedar Rapids. Three Kernels pitchers combined on the three-hit shutout. Roberto Lopez hit a lead-off homer in the top of the fourth inning to account for the only run of the game.

DANG: Rattler starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta allowed one run on three hits over five innings with two walks and six strikeouts. The 2-2 pitch that Lopez hit over the left field wall was the first Scarpetta had allowed this season in 35-2/3 innings. But, it was enough to tag Scarpetta with the loss.

WHAT WAS THAT LINE AGAIN? Tyler Chatwood got the win by pitching 5-2/3 scoreless innings. Chatwood allowed two hits, walked six, and struck out seven for the win.

HE HAD HIS NUMBER: Both of the hits off Chatwood were by Rattler outfielder Chris Dennis. Dennis singled in the second inning and doubled in the sixth.

HERE WAS THE CHANCE: After Dennis singled to start the second inning, John Delaney drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. But, Chatwood got Edgar Trejo to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Chatwood walked Sean McCraw, but got Michael Marseco to ground out to end the inning.

HE’S A MENACE: Dennis has played in 17 games for the Timber Rattlers. Last night was his eighth multi-hit game. He is 24-for-59 (.407) since joining the Rattlers.

GOOD EYE: Delaney walked three times in the game last night. As a team, the Rattlers walked seven times. That marks the second game in a row in which Wisconsin hitters have drawn seven walks in a game.

VERSATILE: Juan Sanchez got the start in center field last night. He has started at least one game at all three outfield positions, at third base, at shortstop, at second base, and as a designated hitter. The only positions he has not played this season are first base, catcher, and pitcher.

SUDDEN FINISH: Delaney singled off Kernel closer Mike Kohn with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Corey Kemp entered the game to pinch-hit for McCraw. An 0-2 pitch to Kemp got away from Cedar Rapids catcher Anel De Los Santos and Delaney broke for second. De Los Santos threw out Delaney for the final out of the game.
