Midwest League Action: Games of June 12, 2009

Complete boxscore

Kane County 2 @Wisconsin 1: Rattlers starter Cody Scarpetta was his own worst enemy in the fourth inning.

@West Michigan 3, South Bend 1: "I got three of the four double plays throwing a sinker," said Shawler, who had his longest professional outing in his two-year career. "This was the best I've ever thrown my sinker, and I'm happy I was able to give the defense a chance to play baseball.

@Fort Wayne 5, Dayton 4 (10 innings): TinCaps manager Doug Dascenzo let his players show up late to Parkview Field on Friday. After playing until close to 1 a.m. the previous night, he figured the team could benefit from the extra rest. Turns out, the TinCaps needed it.

Great Lakes 4 @Lansing 1: Great Lakes Loons pitcher Bobby Blevins held the Lansing Lugnuts to four hits in seven innings and his team's offense scored three runs in the fifth inning for a 4-1 win Friday at Oldsmobile Park.

Beloit 10 @Burlington 5: David Wood knew he was probably going to have to throw some pitches Friday night. "(Manager Jim Gabella) came to me and said they might need me because we're a little short on arms," the Burlington Bees first baseman said. Wood didn't know, though, that he was going to have to throw as long as he did.

Bonus excerpt:
In a series that has had a few testy moments, tempers boiled over in the fifth inning.

Thursday's doubleheader had two home-plate collisions between Beloit baserunners and Bees catchers, plus the ejection of Snappers manager Nelson Prada for arguing a call on the bases in the seventh inning of the first game.

Beloit scored seven runs in the third inning to take any suspense out of the game, then things got chippy.

It started in the bottom of the third, when Bees leadoff hitter Patrick Norris laid down a perfect bunt for a hit. It was the first hit of the game off Beloit starter Daniel Berlind, who responded by hitting the next hitter, Nick Van Stratten, on the wrist.

That stirred the Bees.

Bowden then started the next inning with a fastball that sailed by the head of Soto. Soto, carrying his bat, tried to get to the mound, as Bees catcher Jose Bonilla slowed him down by grabbing his jersey. Players from both sides charged toward the mound, with Prada quickly getting in between Bowden and Soto to play the role of peacemaker. One of Soto's Beloit teammates quickly snatched the bat away.

@Clinton 4, Peoria 2: The LumberKings furthered their assault on a first-half playoff spot.

@Quad Cities 5, Cedar Rapids 4: Seven-error games in the professional levels of baseball usually create the surest formula to ensure a loss. And the Quad-Cities River Bandits surely could not have presented Cedar Rapids with a more gift-wrapped game than the Bandits' seven-error performance at Modern Woodmen Park on Friday night. But the one player who had the most errors on the night - Bandits second baseman Alex Castellanos - found a way to make poor defense work in his team's favor as the Bandits simply outlasted the Kernels, 5-4.
