April 12, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat Clinton 8-2. Chris Dennis had three of Wisconsin’s 12 hits in the game. D’Vontrey Richardson and Michael Marseco each drove in a pair of runs for the Rattlers.

FOCUS ON PITCHING: Starter Damon Krestalude won his Timber Rattlers debut. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two over five innings. Chad Robinson pitched a perfect sixth inning and struck out a pair. Jake Odorizzi allowed one hit and struck out four over three innings for the save.

FIRST: Odorizzi’s save was the first of his professional career.

PECK, PECK, PECK: Wisconsin scored one run in each of the first three innings to grab an early 3-0 lead.

THE DAM BROKE: The Rattlers scored three times on four hits in the fourth inning to go up 6-0. Sean Halton singled in the first run. Richardson delivered a two-out, two-run single later in the frame.

BIG ASSIST: Richardson also picked up the first assist of the season by a Wisconsin outfielder. He threw out a runner at third after an errant pickoff throw to second by Krestalude.

SCOOTER’S START: Rattlers second baseman Scooter Gennett had two hits last night. He has at least one hit in each of the first four games (6-for-16; .375).

BRINGING THE LUMBER: Clinton dropped their opening night at home against the Peoria Chiefs. Clinton won the final two games of the series with the Chiefs. Clinton hit six home runs in the series. After the home run by Kalian Sams last night, Clinton has seven homers on the season.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook listed six member of the current Kane County roster on their top 30 list of Mariners prospects. Infielder Nick Franklin, the 2009 first round pick of Seattle, is ranked at #9. Fellow infielder Marion Martinez is #12. Outfielder James Jones (#20), infielders Dennis Raben (#21) and Gabriel Noriega (#24), and catcher Steven Baron (#25) are also on the list.

YOU LOOK FAMILIAR: Four members of the current LumberKings roster played for the Timber Rattlers when Wisconsin was affiliated with Seattle: Pitcher Jose Jimenez, infielder Luis Nunez, and outfielders Daniel Carroll and Kalian Sams are the Rattlers alums. Terry Pollreisz, the Clinton hitting coach, was the manager of the Timber Rattlers in 2008.

CLINTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Taylor Stanton was the 26th round pick of the Seattle Mariners out of Diablo Valley College in the 2008 draft. Last season, Stanton pitched for the Everett Aquasox of the Northwest League. He went 5-3 with a 3.50 ERA in 15 games (all starts) for the Aquasox. Stanton struck out 81 and walked 25 in 87-1/3 innings in 2009. Today is his LumberKings debut and his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. Stanton has faced a Milwaukee affiliate before today. On July 15, 2008, Stanton pitched a scoreless inning of relief against the Arizona League Brewers.
