April 13, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT YESTERDAY: Clinton defeated the Timber Rattlers 7-4. The LumberKings scored four runs in the first inning and added one more in the second to build an early 5-0 lead.

NOT VERY WELCOMING: Pitcher Eric Arnett made his Midwest League debut for the Timber Rattlers as the starter on Monday. He allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits. Four of the runs and four of the hits off Arnett came in the first five batters he faced.

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LEDGER: Clinton starting pitcher Taylor Stanton retired the first ten batters he faced and did not allow a run until the bottom of the sixth inning.

SAMS HE AM: Kalian Sams hit a three-run homer in the first inning for the LumberKings. He has homered in each of the first two games of the series. Sams, a Timber Rattlers outfielder in 2007, leads the Midwest League in homers with three.

DENNIS THE MENACE: Rattlers designated hitter Chris Dennis had a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season, yesterday. Dennis is 5-for-8 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI in the first two games of this series.

SCOOTER’S START: Rattlers second baseman Scooter Gennett extended his season opening hitting streak to five games with a fourth inning single. Gennett, who went 2-for-3 on Monday, is 8-for-19 (.421) during the season opening hit streak.

A WORD ABOUT THE DEFENSE: The Timber Rattlers committed six errors in the game on Monday. In the first five games, Wisconsin has been charged with 11 errors.

CLINTON STARTING PITCHER: LHP Jimmy Gillheeney was the eighth round pick of the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 draft out of North Carolina State. He was 6-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 13 starts in his final season at NC State. Gillheeney pitched professionally at Pulaski, Seattle’s Appalachian League affiliate, after signing with the M’s. He was 0-3 with a 4.84ERA over six appearances (three starts) for the Mariners. Gillheeney’s LumberKing debut was on Opening Night (4/8) v. Peoria. He gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits over 3-1/3 innings and took the loss. Tonight is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
