April 15 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Fort Wayne beat the Timber Rattlers 5-1. The Wizards broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Drew Cumberland knocked in the first run of the game with a two-out single. Then, Lance Zawakdzki hit a three-run homer for a 4-0 lead. Fort Wayne pitchers Rob Woodard and Geoff Vandel combined to strike out thirteen Timber Rattler hitters.

UNSCORED UPON: Rattler starting pitcher Donnie Hume pitched five scoreless innings last night. He has pitched ten innings in two starts and has allowed no runs on four hits.

UNEARNED: All four of the Wizard runs in the top of the seventh inning were off Timber Rattler reliever Phillippe Aumont. A two-out error kept the inning alive for Cumberland to deliver his RBI single and Zawadzki to hit his homer. That made all four of the runs in the inning unearned.

FIRST OF THE SEASON: The home run by Zawadzki was the first home run allowed by a Timber Rattler pitcher in 2008. Wisconsin was the last pitching staff in all of minor league baseball to allow a home run this season.

LOOKING FOR ONE OF THEIR OWN: The Timber Rattlers are the only team in minor league baseball without a homer so far this season.

END OF THE LINE: Daniel Carroll went 0-for-4 last night. That stopped his season opening hitting streak at seven games.

HELPING HANDS: Carroll and Calvin Beamon each recorded outfield assists last night. Beamon already has two outfield assists this season.

AVERAGING: In eight games this season, the Timber Rattlers have scored 15 runs and allowed 27. They are averaging 1.9 runs per game and allowing 3.4 runs per game.

PAPER MOVES: Before last night’s game, Edward Paredes and Nathan Adcock were shifted to the roster of Everett, while Donnie Hume and Rob Harmon were transferred to the Timber Rattler roster from Everett. These were paper moves only. Paredes and Adcock remain with the team and are scheduled to make their next starts for the Rattlers.

FORT WAYNE STARTING PITCHER: Brandon Gomes was the 17th round pick of the Padres in the 2007 draft out of Tulane University. In his senior season for the Green Wave, Gomes went 7-6 with a 3.92ERA in 16 starts. Gomes went 1-0 in four relief appearances for the Eugene Emeralds before being promoted to Fort Wayne in July of 2007. He went 1-4 with a 4.68ERA for the Wizards after the promotion. He faced the Timber Rattlers on August 4 at Fort Wayne. In that game, Gomes allowed three runs on six hits over five innings for a no decision. So far in 2008, Gomes has made two appearances and one start. He faced the Dayton Dragons in a relief role on April 10 for his last performance. The Dragons got to him for a run on four hits over two innings. He walked one and struck out one in that game.

FORT WAYNE SECOND PITCHER: The Wizards employ the tandem – or “piggyback” – system for their pitchers. The scheduled second pitcher for Fort Wayne tonight is Wynn Pelzer. He was the 9th round pick of the Padres in the 2007 draft out of the University of South Carolina. Pelzer was 2-2 with a save and an ERA of 5.22 in 25 games for the Gamecocks. He did not pitch professionally in 2007. Pelzer made his first professional start on April 10 against the Dayton Dragons. He took the loss as he gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits over 3.1IP. Tonight is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Mariners.
