ABOUT TUESDAY: South Bend beat the Timber Rattlers 8-4. Wisconsin had a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hawks scored eight times on seven hits in their half of the sixth and picked up their second straight win.
IN THE BEGINNING: The Rattlers built scored twice in the third inning and once in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Edilio Colina reached on an error and drove in a run in the third for the first Wisconsin run. A two-out RBI single by Alex Liddi made the score 2-0. Calvin Beamon drove in a run with a two-out single in the fifth.
FIRST: The Rattlers scored first in a game for the first time in ten games yesterday.
THROUGH FIVE: Rattler starter Edward Paredes allowed three hits, a walk, and no runs in his first five innings.
THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY: Paredes walked the lead off batter in the sixth inning to end a streak of nine straight batters retired. He got the next batter, but gave up a single to Aaron Hanke and an RBI single to Ramon Ramirez. Reliever Keith Meyer entered the game and gave up an RBI single to Clayton Conner and a three-run homer to Derrick Walker. The long ball by Walker put South Bend in front 5-3. After a double, Meyer did retire the next hitter. Then, Justin Souza entered the game and gave up an RBI single to Evan Frey and a two-run homer to Taylor Harbin for an 8-3 South Bend lead.
REGROUPED, BUT JUST SHORT: In the top of the ninth, Juan Diaz walked, Gerardo Avila doubled, and Korey Feiner singled to drive in Diaz as the first three batters of the inning. The Silver Hawks got the next batter. Then, Daniel Carroll was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. But, Dan Fournier completed his three inning save by getting the next two batters.
THREE HITS, BUT: Carroll had three hits in his first four plate appearances yesterday. In the ninth, Carroll was hit on the left hand by a pitch as was removed from the game. He was placed on the disabled list today.
ALSO TO THE DL: Gavin Dickey, who left Monday’s game in South Bend, was placed on the disabled list today.
MEET THE NEW GUYS: Outfielders Maximo Mendez and Kevin Reynolds have been placed on the Timber Rattler roster. Reynolds was a 42nd round pick of the Mariners in the 2005 draft out of Quincy College. He played 14 games for the Timber Rattlers in 2006 and 7 games for the Rattlers in 2007. Mendez signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2004 out of the Dominican Republic. Mendez played in the Dominican Summer league from 2004-2006. Last year, he hit .252 with three homers and 27 RBI as a member of the Arizona League Mariners.
SILVER HAWKS IN 2008: They are 4-14 overall and 2-7 at home to start the season. In their most recent series, the Hawks were swept in a three game set at home by the Cedar Rapids Kernels. They snapped a five game losing streak with the win on Monday. Wisconsin and South Bend will play a three-game series on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on July 16-18.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Silver Hawks are hitting .242 as a team and are scoring 3.9 runs per game. South Bend has hit nine home runs. Their pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.09. The Timber Rattlers are hitting .238 and are scoring 2.9 runs per game. Wisconsin has hit two homers. Wisconsin’s pitching staff has an ERA of 3.56.
SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER: Christian Beltre was signed by Arizona as a non-drafted free agent. He was 4-4 in 13 games (11 starts) with a 2.23 ERA for Arizona’s team in the Dominican Summer League in 2006. In 2007, Beltre pitched for Missoula in the Pioneer League. He made 15 starts for the Osprey and was 3-8 with a 5.20ERA. Tonight is his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. In his previous start, Beltre pitched four scoreless innings against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on April 18. He allowed five hits, walked none, and struck out four in that game. Beltre received a no decision in the South Bend loss.
