April 19 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Beloit jumped to an early 5-0 lead and held off the Rattlers for a 5-3 win in a rain-shortened game. The Snappers hit three home runs in the game and handed Edward Paredes the loss.

EARLY POWER: Joe Benson and Steve Singleton, the first two batters in the Beloit lineup, hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning off Paredes. Benson hit the first pitch out to center. Singleton drilled a 3-1 pitch out to right. Those were the first two home runs hit off a Timber Rattler starting pitcher this season. It had been 44-1/3 consecutive innings without a Rattler starter allowing a homer until Benson’s blast.

TOUGH NIGHT: Paredes lasted three innings, allowed four runs on three hits, with three walks, three strikeouts, a hit batsman, a wild pitch, and two errors.

NOT FOR LACK OF CHANCES: The Rattlers had plenty of opportunities early against Beloit starter Brian Kirwan. Calvin Beamon tripled with one out in the first, Joe Dunigan doubled with one out in the second, and Edilio Colina singled to lead off the third. But, the Rattlers did not score in any of those innings.

DOUBLES BY DUNIGAN: Dunigan had a pair of doubles last night to give him four on the season.

LATE RALLY: Wisconsin trailed 5-0 after a Greg Yersich home run off Keith Meyer in the bottom of the fourth. The Rattlers had a runner at second with two out in the top of the fifth inning against Snapper starter Brian Kirwan and with a light rain falling. Alex Liddi doubled in the run. Gerardo Avila singled in Liddi. Then, Juan Diaz knocked in Avila with a single and knocked Kirwan out of the game one out shy of qualifying for the win.

SWOOPING IN: Steven Hirschfeld relieved Kirwan and retired Dunigan to end the top of the fifth. That was enough to get the win.

END GAME: The game was stopped during a heavy downpour with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. After a delay of about 50 minutes, the game ruled final and official.

ALL ALONE IN THE NIGHT: Wisconsin is 0-5 in night games this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They were 79-61 last season and made it to the playoffs as the first half western division champions. Beloit made it to the Midwest League Championship Series, but lost in five games to the West Michigan Whitecaps.

SNAPPERS IN 2008: The Snappers are 6-9 to start this year. In their most recent series, the Snappers went 1-2 in a three-game series with the Dayton Dragons at Pohlman Field. They are 4-7 at home this season under new manager Nelson Prada.

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: David Bromberg was the 32nd round pick of the Twins in the 2005 draft. He was selected out of Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades, California. Bromberg spent 2005 with the Gulf Coast League Twins (3-3, 2.66ERA) and 2006 with the Elizabethton Twins (9-0, 2.78ERA) in the Appalachian League. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. In his last start for the Snappers, Bromberg allowed two runs on four hits over five innings for a no decision against the Dayton Dragons on April 14. He walked four and struck out seven in the game. Bromberg lost his first two starts as a Snapper. Kane County beat him on April 4 and Peoria beat him on April 9 in the second game of a doubleheader at O’Brien Field.

Did you spot the Babylon 5 reference?
