April 21 Game Notes

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Snappers 4-3 at Pohlman Field. The Snappers took an early 3-0 lead. Then, the Rattlers rallied with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Calvin Beamon drove in three runs to lead the comeback. Donnie Hume struck out seven and got his second win. Phillippe Aumont and Shawn Kelley combined to work four shutout innings to close out the Snappers.

SECOND WIN: Hume allowed a two-run homer in the second and a lead off homer in the third for the first runs he has given up this season. He was in line for the loss until the Rattlers rallied in the top of the sixth.

ABOUT THAT COMEBACK: Wisconsin trailed 3-1 after five innings. Beloit starter Mike McCardell left after five innings and the Rattlers rallied against the Beloit bullpen. Charles Nolte walked a batter, struck out a batter, and hit a batter before leaving in favor of Blair Erickson. Alex Meneses drew a walk on four pitches to load the bases and Daniel Carroll drew another four pitch walk to force in a run. Beamon was next and his two-run single gave the Rattlers the 4-3 lead.

AUMONT UPDATE: Seattle’s first round pick of the 2007 draft pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Hume. He allowed one hit, walked a batter, hit a batter, and struck out three.

SAVING THE DAY: Kelley retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his second save of the season. Rattler relievers are 5-for-6 in save opportunities this season.

GREAT EIGHT: Gavin Dickey returned to the lineup yesterday for the first time since the second game of the doubleheader against Dayton on April 13. He was the DH and had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

JUST A LITTLE PATIENCE: In the three game series with the Snappers, Rattler hitters drew 16 walks.

REVERSE VAMPIRES: All six Timber Rattler wins this season have been in day games.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Last season, South Bend was 68-70 and made the playoffs as the second half Eastern Division Champion. South Bend defeated Dayton 2-1 in the best-of-three first round, but lost to West Michigan in the Eastern Division Championship Series. Mark Haley is back for his fourth season as the manager of the Silver Hawks.

SILVER HAWKS IN 2008: They are 2-14 overall and 0-7 at home to start the season. In their most recent series, the Hawks were swept in a three game set at home by the Cedar Rapids Kernels. They have lost five straight games.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Silver Hawks are hitting .230 as a team and are scoring 3.6 runs per game. South Bend has hit six home runs. Their pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.30. The Timber Rattlers are hitting .228 and are scoring 2.8 runs per game. Wisconsin has hit two homers. Wisconsin’s pitching staff has an ERA of 2.98.

2007 SEASON SERIES: The Timber Rattlers went 3-5 against the Silver Hawks last season. Wisconsin was 2-2 at Coveleski Stadium last year.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook has placed two current Silver Hawks on their list of top 30 Arizona prospects. Pitcher Jarrod Parker checks in at #2. Infielder Clayton Conner is at #24.

OUT OF THE DRAFT: There are 12 members of the 2007 Diamondback draft class on the Silver Hawk roster. Parker was the first round pick of Arizona. Pitcher Bryan Augenstein (7th), infielder Taylor Harbin (8th), and outfielder Evan Frey (10th) are the other picks from the first ten rounds with South Bend. Pitchers Bryan Henry (12th), Billy Spottiswood (25th), Tom Layne (26th) and Evan Scribner (28th); outfielders Mike Mee (16th), Anthony Smith (21st), and Aaron Hanke (38th); and infielder Eli Rumler (39th) are also out of the 2007 draft.

VETERANS: There are six current Silver Hawks who played at least part of the 2007 season with South Bend.

SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER: Bryan Augenstein was the 7th round pick of the Diamondbacks in the 2007 draft out of the University of Florida. In his final year with the Gators, Augenstein was 8-5 in 16 starts with a 4.98ERA. He pitched for the Missoula Osprey in the Pioneer League after signing with the Diamondbacks last year. He made ten appearances (two starts) and was 0-2 with a 3.38ERA. In his last start for the Silver Hawks, Augenstein allowed one run on six hits over five innings for a no decision at Kane County on April 15. Augenstein has not walked a batter and has struck out 16 in 17-2/3 innings this season. Tonight is his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

I prefer the G-N-R version over the Colin Quinn version.
