April 22 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Silver Hawks beat the Timber Rattlers 5-4. Ramon Ramirez broke a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning. Taylor Harbin had a homer and two RBI for the Hawks. The win was the first home victory for the Silver Hawks this season.

EARLY RISERS: South Bend had a 1-0 lead two batters into the bottom of the first. Evan Frey tripled to start the inning and a single by Harbin gave the Hawks the lead. In the second, Eli Rumler doubled in a run and scored on a Frey single.

BACK AT YOU: Calvin Beamon knocked Wisconsin’s first run with an RBI grounder in the third. An RBI single by Alex Liddi in the fifth got the Rattlers to within 3-2.

GOING DEEP: Harbin homered to start the bottom of the fifth for his first of the season.

TYING IT UP: Wisconsin scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game 4-4. A balk by South Bend reliever Chad Beck let the first run cross the plate. A two-out RBI single by Juan Diaz tied the game.

GAME WINNER: The Silver Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth against Jake Wild. Reliever Ryan Moorer entered the game and gave up the sacrifice fly to Ramirez.

IN THE NINTH: Blake Ochoa doubled to start the top of the ninth inning against Evan Scribner, but he was left stranded there when the game ended.

NEW SEASON HIGH: Wisconsin had 12 hits in the game last night for a new team high in that category.

SPEAKING OF HITS: Gavin Dickey singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Also, Eddy Hernandez singled in the fourth inning to end an 0-for-20 streak to start the season.

TURNING TWO: The Timber Rattler defense turned three double plays in the game last night.

THIS IS GETTING MONOTONOUS: The opponents have scored first in the last ten games against the Timber Rattlers. In the last three games, the Rattlers have fallen behind 3-0 before scoring their first run.

NIGHT MOVES: The Timber Rattlers are 0-6 in night games this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Last season, South Bend was 68-70 and made the playoffs as the second half Eastern Division Champion. South Bend defeated Dayton 2-1 in the best-of-three first round, but lost to West Michigan in the Eastern Division Championship Series. Mark Haley is back for his fourth season as the manager of the Silver Hawks.

SILVER HAWKS IN 2008: They are 3-14 overall and 1-7 at home to start the season. In their most recent series, the Hawks were swept in a three game set at home by the Cedar Rapids Kernels. They snapped a five game losing streak with the win last night.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Silver Hawks are hitting .238 as a team and are scoring 3.6 runs per game. South Bend has hit seven home runs. Their pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.22. The Timber Rattlers are hitting .235 and are scoring 2.9 runs per game. Wisconsin has hit two homers. Wisconsin’s pitching staff has an ERA of 3.17.

SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER: Jarrod Parker was the ninth overall selection as the first round pick of the Diamondbacks out of Norwell (IN) High School. In his senior season, Parker was 7-0 with a 0.20ERA and struck out 68 batters in 34 innings. Parker signed in August after the draft and did not pitch professionally last season. Today is his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. In Parker’s last start, he pitched at Kane County on April 16. He allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits over three innings. He walked one and struck out two for a no decision. Parker is rated as the #2 prospect in the Diamondback organization by Baseball America.
