May 13 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Burlington Bees beat the Timber Rattlers 1-0 in ten innings. A bases loaded wild pitch allowed the only run to score in the top of the tenth.

FIRST OF THE SEASON: The Rattlers went to extra-innings for the first time this season last night. Wisconsin was 9-2 in extra innings last season.

FAMILIAR TERRITORY: Last night was Burlington’s seventh extra-inning game of the season.

FAMILIAR TERRITORY II: Last season, four of the eight games played between the Rattlers and Bees were decided by one run.

*SCORELESS, SCORELESS, SCORELESS: Timber Rattler starter Nathan Adcock allowed four hits, walked two, and matched his career high for strikeouts in a game with nine over pitched 6-2/3 innings. This was the second game in a row in which Adcock has struck out nine and he extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings.

MATCHING: Burlington starter Alex Caldera tossed seven scoreless innings and also struck out nine while allowing four hits and walking one.

THIRTEENS: Both pitching staffs recorded 13 strikeouts in the game.

HITTING THE WALL: Burlington catcher Ryan Eigsti threw out three of four would-be base stealers last night, including throwing out a runner trying to steal second for the final out of the game. He has thrown out 11 of 36 would be base-stealers (.306) this season.

THE WINNING RALLY: Rattler reliever Walter Suriel allowed a one-out single to Adrian Ortiz in the top of the tenth. Then, David Lough drew a four pitch walk. Suriel struck out Mike Moustakas, but walked Jason Taylor to load the bases. Ryan Moorer relieved at this point and threw his first pitch to the backstop. Ortiz scored on the play.

CHANCES WERE: Wisconsin loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning against Burlington reliever Chris Chavez. He got out of the inning to send the game to extra-innings.

TRANSACTION: Just before last night’s game, outfielder Eddy Hernandez was transferred to the Everett AquaSox roster. Denny Almonte joined the Timber Rattlers and got into the game as a pinch runner. Almonte was the 2nd round pick of the Mariners in the 2007 June draft and is rated as the #24 prospect in the Seattle organization.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Burlington Bees are the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Last season, the Bees went 61-77 and missed the playoffs. Brian Rupp is in his first year as the manager of the Bees.

BEES IN 2008: The Bees are 15-20 and in seventh place in the Midwest League’s Western Division. They trail first place Clinton by 11 games. In their most recent series, the Bees were swept in a three game series at home by the Beloit Snappers. The final game of the series on Sunday was rained out.

GET FAMILIAR: The Rattlers and Bees will play 16 times this season. Eight on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium and eight at Community Field.

WATCH OUT FOR: Adrian Ortiz is hitting .320 and is currently eighth in the Midwest League batting race. Edward Cegarra only has a 1-3 record, but his in the top ten in ERA (1.93; 7th) and top five in strikeouts (42, T-4th).

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .230 as a team and have scored 106 runs (3.2/game). Wisconsin has hit eight home runs this season. The Timber Rattler pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.32. Burlington is hitting .216 as a team and has scored 128 runs (3.7/game). The Bees have hit 21 homers this season. The Burlington pitching staff has an ERA of 3.34.

BURLINGTON STARTING PITCHER: Zach Peterson was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Illinois-Chicago after the 2007 draft. He was 7-4 in 17 games (16 starts) with a 3.54 ERA for the Flames. Peterson went 5-3 with and ERA of 2.89 for Idaho Falls of the Pioneer League after signing with the Royals. In one game last season, on August 21 against Billings, Peterson struck out 13 batters – including 11 straight. In his last start for the Bees, Peterson faced the Fort Wayne Wizards on May 7. He did not allow a run over six innings with seven strikeouts as he picked up a win.
