May 17 Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Kane County Cougars 8-6 to extend their season-high winning streak to four games. The Rattlers scored four runs in the third and four runs in the eighth. Edward Paredes got the win and Justin Souza got the final out for his second save.

FIGURE EIGHT: The Rattlers set a new season high for runs in a game with their eight run outburst last night.

SEVENTH HEAVEN: Wisconsin is now 7-2 in the first nine games of their current 11-game homestand.

WITH SIX YOU GET EGGROLL: The Timber Rattlers used six pitchers in last night’s game. Paredes allowed three runs on four hits in 5-1/3 innings and got the win. Travis Mortimore and Ryan Moorer did not allow a run in their outings. Walter Suriel entered in the ninth with an 8-3 lead and allowed three runs on four hits. Jose Escalona relieved Suriel and got one out, but walked a batter to put the tying run on base. Souza picked up his second save of the week of less than three outs by getting Jake Smith to fly out to center.

THE RATTLER FIVE: Five different Rattlers drove in runs last night. Liddi had three, and Gavin Dickey, Edilio Colina, Calvin Beamon, and Maximo Mendez all drove in one run a piece.

FORE! The win last night gave Wisconsin their first four game winning streak of the season. The Rattlers had a pair of four game winning streaks in 2007, but never went over that mark.

THREE FOR ALL: The Cougars scored all of their runs on a pair of three-run homers. Corey Brown hit one in the top of the sixth off Paredes. Matt Ray hit his off Suriel in the ninth.

TWO IN A ROW: Paredes has won two straight decisions to even his record at 3-3.

ONE TO GO: The win last night put the Rattlers at 18-19. This is the first time Wisconsin has been this close to .500 in 2008 since they were 6-7 after a win at Beloit on April 20.

EXTENDING THE STREAK: Mendez had a pair of hits last night to move his current season-high hitting streak to seven-games (10-for-26).

COUGARS IN 2008: Kane County is 25-13 and in second place in the Midwest League Western Division. They trail first place Clinton by 2.5 games. The Cougars are 14-5 in road games this season. In their most recent series, the Cougars took three out of four games from the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Elfstrom Stadium.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .244 as a team and have scored 130 runs (3.5/game). Wisconsin has hit nine home runs this season. The Timber Rattler pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.31. Kane County is hitting .256 as a team and has scored 172 runs (4.5/game). The Cougars have hit 21 homers this season. The Kane County pitching staff has an ERA of 2.48.

KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: Scott Hodsdon was the 6th round pick of the Athletics in the 2007 draft out of Azusa Pacific University. In his final season at APU, Hodsdon was 10-1 in 25 games (14 starts) with an ERA of 3.17 and struck out 116 with 25 walks in 108 innings. In his first professional season, Hodsdon went 7-1 with a 4.57ERA in 16 games (10 starts) for the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. He struck out 67 and walked 23 in 67 innings for Vancouver. In his start prior to this afternoon, Hodsdon pitched five shutout innings against Cedar Rapids on May 12, but got a no decision. He allowed four hits and struck out four in that game. Hodsdon is making his first appearance against the Rattlers, but he faced Everett, Seattle’s Northwest League affiliate, three times (two starts) in 2007. He was 1-0 with a 4.15ERA and 20 strikeouts in 13 innings. His win was on September 1, a game in which Hodsdon went 8-2/3 shutout innings and gave up three hits while striking out 12.
