ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat the Snappers 8-2. Corey Kemp had three hits and drove in three runs to pace the offense. Liam Ohlmann pitched two innings in relief for the win and Evan Frederickson pitched four innings for his first pro save. Wisconsin has won five of their last six games.
SLICK WILY: Rattlers starting pitcher Wily Peralta made the start for the Timber Rattlers last night. It was the first time Peralta had started in back-to-back outings. He reached his pitch limit in the after three innings. Peralta allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts. The only run he gave up was on a bases loaded hit batsman with two outs in the third.
FOUR! The Timber Rattlers grabbed a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brock Kjeldgaard doubled and scored on a single by Kemp. After a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt, Sean McCraw doubled in both runners. Then, Derrick McPhearson tripled to knock in McCraw.
ADDING ON: Wisconsin tacked on three runs in the third inning. Kemp singled home a pair of runs to make the score 6-1. Another run scored on a 5-4-3 double play.
EVEN LIAM: Ohlmann allowed two hits over two innings to get the win. His record stands at 3-3 on the season.
SAVED: Frederickson allowed one hit with five walks and five strikeouts over four scoreless innings to close out the Snappers. Not only was last night the first save for Frederickson, it was also his first save opportunity.
THE BIG 3-0: One of Kemp’s three hits last night was a double. He has 30 doubles this season and is just outside the top 10 on the Timber Rattlers franchise list for doubles in a single season. A group of four players: Joe Dunigan (2008), TJ Bohn (2003), Greg Connors (1998), and Luis Tinoco (1996) are tied for eighth place at 31 doubles. The franchise record is held by Bo Robinson, who had 50 in 1999.
28 DAYS: Today marks the final day in a stretch of 28 consecutive days with a game for the Timber Rattlers. There were no rainouts over the last four weeks.
MAKING MOVES: Earlier today, the Milwaukee Brewers announced the promotion of Timber Rattlers second baseman Brett Lawrie to Huntsville, the Double-A Southern League Affiliate of the Brewers. Mike Brownstein, the 14th round pick of Milwaukee in the 2009 draft out of the University of New Mexico, has been promoted from Helena, Milwaukee’s Pioneer League affiliate, to take Lawrie’s spot on the roster.
A NOTE ABOUT ATTENDANCE: The crowd of 3,350 for yesterday’s Timber Rattlers game pushed the season attendance for Wisconsin to 214,112 for an average of 3,569. The franchise record for single season attendance is 233,797. If the Rattlers just draw their average attendance of the last 8 home games they will have a total attendance of 242,664.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They missed the playoffs in the first half of the season and are currently 21-30 in the second half of the season. Beloit is in seventh place of the Western Division and they are a 1/2 game ahead of the Timber Rattlers. They trail division leading Peoria by 9-1/2 games and are 3-1/2 games behind Clinton for the Wild Card. The Snappers have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games.
SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 5-4 against the Snappers in 2009. Wisconsin took two out of three from the Snappers at Pohlman Field in late May. The teams split a four game series at Time Warner Cable Field in early June.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .240 as a team. They have scored 487 runs (4.0/game) and hit 57 home runs. The Snappers are hitting .253 as a team. They have scored 519 runs (4.3/game) and hit 58 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.29 while allowing a total of 591 runs (4.9/game). BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RHP Daniel Berlind was a seventh round pick of the Twins in the 2007 draft out of Los Angeles Pierce Junior College where he was the Western State South All-Conference Pitcher of the Year. Berlind began 2008 with Beloit and went 4-4 with a 4.47ERA in 11 games (10 starts). In June, Berlind was sent to Elizabethton in the Appalachian League where he was 2-3 with a 10.98 ERA in 14 games (eight starts). As a Snapper, Berlind is 3-12 with a 5.02 ERA in 25 games (18 starts) with 85 strikeouts and 44 walks over 107-2/3 innings. In his start prior to this evening, Clinton beat Berlind on August 13. In that game, he gave up five runs on eight hits over 4-2/3 innings. Berlind faced the Timber Rattlers in game one of a doubleheader on June 7. He allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts over six innings and for a loss in a complete game. Berlind has pitched two complete games this season and has lost both of them. He also lost the first game of a doubleheader at Cedart Rapids on August 8.
