August 27, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Burlington beat the Timber Rattlers 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Trey Watten allowed one run over seven innings for Wisconsin. Manauris Baez gave up one run and struck out seven over six innings. Neither starter was involved in the decision.

SCRATCHING FOR RUNS: Burlington scored their first run in the third innings. Norris singled with two outs and a runner at second to drive in the run. The Rattlers tied the game with an RBI double by Derrick Alfonso in the top o the sixth.

PICKING THEM OFF: Watten picked two runners off base in last night’s game. The righty caught Shawn Griffin at first base in the second inning. Watten caught Norris too far away from second base in the bottom of the sixth inning.

THIS IS MY PLACE: Watten had pitched 15 innings against the Bees at Community Field this season. He has allowed one run on six hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

DARN: Nick Tyson relieved Watten to start the eighth inning and retired the side in order. Tyson got the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. But, David Wood’s foul pop down the left field line dropped just out of the reach of two Rattlers fielders to keep the inning alive. Wood followed with a double to get into scoring position as the winning run.

CURSES: Jason Taylor’s grounder to third was handled cleanly, but the throw to first was low and could not be scooped. By the time the ball was retrieved, Wood had crossed home with the winning run.

ONE: Last night was the 23rd time this season the Timber Rattlers have been held to one run in a game. The Rattlers are 3-20 in games in which they have scored one run.
