Midwest League Action: Games of August 24, 2009

Complete scoreboard

@Burlington 5, Wisconsin 1: There was not much offensive production between the Burlington Bees and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night. What there was, though, was powerful and enough to keep the Bees in front of the Midwest League's Western Division wild-card race.

@South Bend 7, Dayton 3:
Throwing strikes from the mound isn't unusual at Coveleski Stadium.

Former Notre Dame star A.J. Pollock's strikes, however, arrived from center field.

Pollock threw out two Dayton Dragons at home plate, and South Bend rallied for six runs in the seventh inning for an electrifying 7-3 Midwest League victory Monday night.
Fort Wayne 5, @Great Lakes 1: The Great Lakes Loons squandered several opportunities to score Monday — and one big opportunity to inch closer to a playoff berth.

West Michigan 5 @Lansing 4: Whitecaps version | Lugnuts version

@Cedar Rapids 4, Clinton 3: Newcomer Johnny Hellweg made his Kernels debut last night and got the save by surviving a rocky ninth inning. The 6-foot-7, 200-pounder, who was closing games for the Arizona Rookie League Angels before his promotion over the weekend, walked two guys but stranded the bases loaded by getting Luis Nunez to pop to first for the final out. Hellweg went 3-0 on Nunez before throwing a strike.

@Kane County 4, Beloit 3 (10 innings): Cougars version | Snappers version

@Peoria 2, Quad Cities 0:
With the way the Peoria Chiefs have been hitting in August, it’s easy to overlook just how strong their pitching has been.

There was no overlooking it on Monday as the Chiefs beat the Quad Cities River Bandits 2-0 for Peoria’s fourth shutout in eight games behind another seven strong innings from Austin Bibens-Dirkx.
