ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers lost 11-2 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Manaurys Correa took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and Jon Townsend had a pair of homers and seven RBI for the Kernels.
ROUGH BOYS: The Kernels offense knocked out 14 hits on the way to their win last night. Townsend was 4-for-4 and Darwin Perez had three hits to pace the offense. Townsend hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to give the Kernels an early 2-0 lead.
I’M ONE: The Rattlers pulled to within 2-1 by scoring a run without a hit in the bottom of the third. Jose Duran walked, stole second, went to third on an error, and scored on an infield grounder by Sean McCraw.
A LITTLE IS ENOUGH: Cedar Rapids scored three times in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. They were never threatened for the lead from that point.
FACE THE FACE: Correa struck out four, walked three, and hit a batter over the first 8-1/3 innings.
BRILLIANT BLUES: Mike Brownstein’s clean single to center broke up Correa’s no-hit bid. Brownstein would eventually come around to score on a single y Erik Komatsu.
AFTER THE FIRE: Rattler outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard went 0-for-4 last night. His team high 10-game hitting streak ended as he popped out twice and flew out twice. Kjeldgaard has a hit in 18 of the 21 Timber Rattlers games in August.
I AM SECURE: The Timber Rattlers have been no-hit twice in their 15 year history, but no single pitcher has no-hit Wisconsin over nine innings. Johnny Cueto of Dayton tossed a 5-ininng no-no in 2006 and Dusty Hughes and Jake Mullis of Burlington pitched a combined no-hitter in 2004. Also – according to the Midwest League Media guide – no Kernels pitcher has tossed a no-hitter of any length since Ramon Ortiz on August 7, 1997.
