Game Notes 5/4

ABOUT TUESDAY: The Timber Rattlers led the West Michigan Whitecaps 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth inning. But, Wisconsin starting pitcher Jason Snyder ran into trouble. The Whitecaps loaded the bases with one out. Cory Middleton doubled into left to drive in a pair of runs and give the Caps a 3-2 lead. One out later, the Whitecaps reloaded the bases and Justin Justice creamed a grand slam to rightcenter. The Whitecaps never looked back.

SET ‘EM UP, SET ‘EM DOWN: Four Whitecap pitchers combined to set down the final eighteen Timber Rattler batters in order. Starting pitcher Burke Badenhop gave up a lead off double in the bottom of the fourth. Then, he set down the final nine batters he faced. Matt Rusch (7th), Ricky Steik (8th), and Orlando Perdomo (9th) all retired the side in order in the one inning that each pitched.

SERIES LINESCORE: The Whitecaps took three out of four from the Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium. The series linescore looked like this:

END OF THE LINE: Robby Hudson went 0-for-3 and saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end on Tuesday night. The longest current hitting streak for the Rattlers is three games. Both Jeff Dominguez and Bryan Sabatella are on three game streaks.

UNFRIENDLY CONFINES: The Timber Rattlers are 5-10 at Fox Cities Stadium.

ROAD WARRIORS: On the flipside, Wisconsin is 7-4 on the road.

TEMP WORK: Rattler pitching coach Lance Painter did not make the trip to Cedar Rapids due to illness. Oliver Arias will be the acting pitching coach for the Timber Rattlers in this series.

PITCHING SWITCH: Harold Williams has been named the starting pitcher of Saturday’s game against the Kernels to take the place of Marwin Vega.


ROSTER MOVE: The Seattle Mariners have promoted catcher Brian Schweiger to AA San Antonio of the Texas League.

MEET THE NEW GUY: The newest Timber Rattler is catcher Julian Henson. When Henson appears in a game, it will be his professional debut. The Mariners selected Henson with their 33rd round pick in the 2005 draft out of Cordova High School in Tennessee. Henson hit .408 for the Wolves before being drafted. He signed too late to play professionally in ’05, but did participate in the Arizona Instructional League in the fall.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels are the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They are 13-13 and tied for third place in the Western Division. In their most recent series, the Kernels took three out of four games from the South Bend Silver Hawks at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Cedar Rapids swept a three game series from the Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium April 13-15. The Kernels won 7-2, 4-2, and 5-3.

PROSPECTING: The Kernels have five members of BASEBALL AMERICA’S Top 30 Angel prospect list. Pitchers Nick Adenhardt (#6), Tommy Mendoza (#10), and Stephen Marek (#18) are joined by infielders Mark Trumbo (#12) and Hainley Statia (#16). The Kernels have nine members of the Angels 2005 draft class on their roster. Mendoza (5th round), Robert Romero (7th), Robert Moseback (9th), Brad Coon (15th), Dallas Morris (24th), Brok Butcher (25th), Tim Didjurgis (31st), Marco Albano (33rd) and Flint Wipke (38th).

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Nick Adenhart was the 14th round pick of the Angels in the 2004 draft out of Williamsport (MD) High School. He was 3-3 with a 3.24 ERA between the AZL Angels and the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League in 2005. So far this season, Adenhart is 3-0. He received a no decision in his last start. On April 28 at Lansing he gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings with six strikeouts. This is Adenhart’s first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. He did not face the AZL Mariners in Arizona League play in 2005.
