Game Notes for 5/5

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Kernels beat the Timber Rattlers 6-2. Nick Adenhart gave up two runs in seven innings to run his record to 4-0. Mark Trumbo and Warner Madrigal each had solo home runs for the Kernels.

A MAN TO REMEMBER: Trumbo added an RBI single and had a total of three hits for the Kernels.

MADRIGAL DINNER: The home run that Madrigal hit was his first of the season. Last year, he hit fifteen homers for the Kernels.

NEW CAREER HIGH: Timber Rattler starting pitcher Justin Thomas struck out a career high seven batters over six innings last night, but got tagged for the loss.

BIG FLIES: Last night was the first night that a Rattler pitcher gave up two home runs in a game.

EXPRESS LANE: Last night’s game was the shortest 9-inning game of the season for the Rattlers. It took just 2:09. Adenhart gave up five hits and struck out seven. There were only two walks in the game – one by each starting pitcher.

LOW PAIR: Rattler right fielder Jairo Hernandez committed two errors in the game last night.

GET THEM IN: Both of the Rattler runs and two of the Kernel runs last night came in on infield ground outs.

HOUSE OF HORROR: In their last nine games at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Rattlers are 2-7. Wisconsin went 1-3 against the Kernels here in both 2004 and 2005.

TEMP WORK: Rattler pitching coach Lance Painter did not make the trip to Cedar Rapids due to illness. Oliver Arias will be the acting pitching coach for Wisconsin in this series.

MEET THE NEW GUY: The newest Timber Rattler is catcher Julian Henson. When Henson appears in a game, it will be his professional debut. The Mariners selected Henson with their 33rd round pick in the 2005 draft out of Cordova High School in Tennessee. Henson hit .408 for the Wolves before being drafted. He signed too late to play professionally in ’05, but did participate in the Arizona Instructional League in the fall.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Kelly Shearer was a 14th round pick of the Angels in the 2003 draft out of Elkins High School in Missouri City, Texas. In 2004 – his first pro season – Shearer split time with Mesa of the Arizona League and Provo of the Pioneer League. He went 2-3 in fifteen appearances (ten starts) and had an ERA of 3.34. Last season with Orem in the Pioneer League, he was 2-4 with a 3.62 ERA in fifteen games (thirteen starts). In his last start, Shearer got his first win of the season. On April 29, he allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five in six innings to get the win over the South Bend Silver Hawks in Cedar Rapids. Shearer got a no decision at Fox Cities Stadium against the Rattlers on April 13. He lasted four innings as the Rattlers got to him for five hits and four walks, but Shearer struck out five and allowed just two runs in a game the Kernels won 7-2.

FAGAN-SHEARER II: Today’s pitching match up is a rematch of match up at Fox Cities Stadium on April 13.
