ABOUT SUNDAY: The Rattlers and the Dayton Dragons split a doubleheader on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Wisconsin won game one 4-1. Dayton won game two 3-1.
GAME ONE RECAP: Edward Paredes was the winning pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. In his Midwest League debut, the lefty allowed one run on five hits over five innings, walked three and struck out four. Alex Liddi, Calvin Beamon, and Gavin Dickey each had two hits and an RBI to pace the Rattler offense. Keith Meyer pitched a scorless seventh for the save.
GAME TWO RECAP: Dayton scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Rattler starting pitcher Nathan Adcock allowed two runs over six innings, but took the loss. Matt Klinker tossed five innings and gave up an unearned run for a win in his Midwest League debut. Enerio Del Rosario retired all six batters he faced for his third save of the season.
DOWN QUIETLY: Klinker and Del Rosario combined to retire the final ten Rattler hitters of game two.
A MAN OF QUALITY: Adcock’s six inning outing is the longest by a Wisconsin starting pitcher this year. It was also the first quality start (6IP with less than three earned runs). Adcock had four quality starts with the Rattlers in 2007.
WINS AND LOSSES: In their three wins in 2007, Wisconsin has scored a total of eight runs. In their four losses this season, the Rattlers have scored six runs.
STILL GOING: Daniel Carroll and Dickey each had at least one hit in both games of the doubleheader on Sunday. Both players have 7-game hitting streaks.
HOWEVER: Carroll stole a base in game one, but did not steal a base in game two. His streak of consecutive games with a stolen base ended at six.
ALSO: Dickey left game two of the doubleheader in the top of the second after pulling up short on a popup to shallow rightfield.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Fort Wayne Wizards are the Midwest League affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Last season, the Wizards had a record of 55-84 and missed the playoffs. Former major leaguer Doug Dascenzo is as the manger back for the second consecutive season.
2008 SO FAR: The Wizards are off to a 2-9 start this year. They just completed a three game series at Beloit. Fort Wayne won game one on Friday night, but were swept in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
2007 SEASON SERIES: The Timber Rattlers went 4-4 against Fort Wayne last season. The Wizards were 3-1 on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in the first half. The Rattlers went 3-1 at Memorial Stadium in the second half.
PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook places three members of the 2008 Fort Wayne roster on their list of the top 30 prospects in the Padres organization. Outfielders Yefri Carvajal and Kellen Kulbacki are #13 and #14 respectively. Shortstop Drew Cumberland is rated #16.
OUT OF THE DRAFT: There are 16 Wizards on the current roster who were selected by San Diego in the 2007 draft. Those players are: Pitchers Tyler Davis (21st), Brandon Gomes (17th), Allen Harrington (13th), Jeremy Hefner (5th), Colt Hynes (31st), Wynn Pelzer (9th), Matt Teague (8th), and Robert Woodard (20t); catcher Luis Martinez (12th); infielders Justin Baum (7th), Drew Cumberland (1st – supplemental), Andy Parrino (26th), and Lance Zawadzki (4th); and outfielders Brad Chalk (2nd), Kellen Kulbacki (1st – supplemental), and Angelo Mercado (23rd).
VETERANS: There are eight members of the 2008 Fort Wayne roster who played for the Wizards in 2007.
FORT WAYNE STARTING PITCHER: Robert Woodard was the 20th round pick of the Padres in the 2007 draft out of the University of North Carolina. In his senior season for the Tarheels, Woodard went 11-2 with a 3.30ERA in 19 games. In his first pro stop, he went 3-2 with two saves and an ERA of 3.89 in 23 games – all in relief – for the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League. Woodard also made two appearances for the Portland Beavers (PCL) and was 0-1 with five earned runs allowed in three innings. Woodard is making his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers, but he made three appearances against Everett (Seattle’s NWL affiliate) in 2007. He was 1-0 with a save and allowed one run in six innings. IN his last appearance, Woodard allowed five runs (one earned) in a two-inning relief appearance against Dayton on April 9 and took the loss.
FORT WAYNE SECOND PITCHER: The Wizards employ the tandem – or “piggyback” – system for their pitchers. The scheduled second pitcher for Fort Wayne tonight is Geoff Vandel. He was the 34th round pick of the Padres in the 2005 draft out of Shaw High School in Columbus Georgia. He is 9-6 with a 4.02ERA in his minor league career. Last season, Vandel was 5-4 with a 4.29ERA for the Arizona League affiliate of the Padres. He made one start for the Wizards in 2007 and allowed five runs in .2IP against South Bend on August 30. In his last appearance, Vandel picked up a no decision against Dayton on April 9. He allowed three runs over five innings.
