August 13, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers beat the Kernels 10-5. Brett Lawrie had three hits and two RBI to pace the 15-hit attack for the Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin had an 8-0 lead and held off a late Kernels charge for the win.

INTO DOUBLE DIGITS: Last night, Wisconsin reached 10 runs for the second time this month and for the fourth time this season.

(ALMOST) EVERYONE HITS: Eight of the nine Timber Rattlers in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Brock Kjeldgaard joined Lawrie with three hits in the game. Josh Prince, Corey Kemp, and Erik Miller each had a pair of hits for Wisconsin. Kemp also had a pair of RBI for the Rattlers.

LEST WE FORGET: Wily Peralta tossed five shutout innings, allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out three. Peralta earned his fourth win of the season.

SITUATIONALLY: Wisconsin scored three times on RBI ground outs and once on a sacrifice fly to get runs home from third base with less than two outs.

RISP: Timber Rattlers hitters went 6-for-21 with runners in scoring position last night.

BACK CAME THE KERNELS: Cedar Rapids trailed 8-heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. They scored four times in the sixth on three walks and three hits. The Kernels scored one more time in the seventh to get to within 8-5.

INSURANCE: Wisconsin tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pad the lead.

CLOSING TIME: Rattlers reliever Brandon Ritchie pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts over the eighth and ninth innings. Ritchie leads the Timber Rattlers pitchers in appearances with 41. Opponents are hitting .183 against him and his ERA moved down to 1.87 for the season after last night’s appearance.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels at the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Cedar Rapids is in the Midwest League Playoffs as the first half wild card in the Western Division. They finished the first half with a record of 40-30. In the second half, the Kernels are 25-21. The Kernels entered the series with the Timber Rattlers off a five-game series with the Beloit Snappers in Cedar Rapids. The Kernels went 2-3 as Beloit won the final three games of the set.

SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 3-7 in nine games against the Kernels this season. The Rattlers went 1-3 against Cedar Rapids at Perfect Game Field May 12-15. Wisconsin was 1-3 against the Kernels at Time Warner Cable Field June 2-5.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .238 as a team. They have scored 455 runs (3.9/game) and hit 53 home runs. The Kernels are hitting .251 as a team. They have scored 545 runs (4.7/game) and hit 51 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.33 while allowing a total of 571 runs (4.9/game). Cedar Rapids pitchers have a team ERA of 3.74 while allowing 488 runs (4.2/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 131 errors. The Kernels defense has committed 110 errors. Wisconsin is 18-37 on the road this season. Cedar Rapids is 35-23 at Perfect Game Field in 2009.

CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: LHP Buddy Boshers was a 4th round pick of the Angels in the 2008 draft out of Calhoun Community College. He spent last year with Orem in the Pioneer League and was 5-0 with a 2.63 ERA in 13 games (12 starts). Boshers began the 2009 season at extended spring training before joining the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League for two scoreless relief appearances. Boshers returned to the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League and went 2-1 with a 2.55ERA in five starts. He joined the Kernels in mid-July and has made four starts. Boshers is 2-1 with a 6.86ERA for Cedar Rapids. In his start prior to this evening, Boshers pitched a seven inning complete game in the first game of a doubleheader at Beloit. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three to get the win. Boshers has never faced the Timber Rattlers. He has faced an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers once before tonight. On August 16, 2008, Boshers beat the Helen Brewers in a Pioneer League game. He allowed one unearned run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings for the Owlz.
