August 14, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers beat the Kernels 6-5. Brett Lawrie tied the game 4-4 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning. In the ninth, Josh Prince drove in the go ahead run with a single. Then, the Rattlers scored a run on a wild pitch to go up 6-4. Nick Tyson got out of a huge jam in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.

COME BACK: Cedar Rapids led the Timber Rattlers 4-1 after the fifth inning. Wisconsin rallied to tie the game with an RBI triple by Pete Fatse in the sixth, a solo home run by Michael Vass in the seventh, and Lawrie’s sac fly in the eighth.

VASS VS. CEDAR RAPIDS: Vass has hit six homers this season. Three of them are against the Kernels and two of them are at Perfect Game Field.

HOLD ON: After the Rattlers took the lead in the top of the ninth, the Kernels loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. An RBI single by Matt Crawford pulled the Kernels to within a run.

NICK TYSON’S PUNCH OUT: Tyson, who came into the game after the first two runners had reached base in the bottom of the ninth, struck out Alexi Amarista and got Roberto Lopez to ground into a game ending 4-6-3 double play.

A TIME FOR TWIN KILLINGS: The Rattlers turned three more double plays last night. They have 109 double plays this season.

PRINCE OF THE CITY: Josh Prince walked twice, scored twice, stole a base, and drove in a run for the Rattlers last night. He has reached base in all 10 games he has played with the Timber Rattlers.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE: Three runs is the largest deficit the Timber Rattlers have rallied from to win a game this season. They had done it three times before last night. But, the last time Wisconsin rallied from three runs down to win a game was on June 11 against Kane County.

IT’S BEEN AWHILE (PT II): The Timber Rattlers have won their last two game for their first winning streak since July 12 and July 13 when they won the final two games of a series at home against the South bend Silver Hawks. The last time the Rattlers won two straight road games was June 18 and the first game of a doubleheader on June 20 at Kane County.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels at the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Cedar Rapids is in the Midwest League Playoffs as the first half wild card in the Western Division. They finished the first half with a record of 40-30. In the second half, the Kernels are 25-22. The Kernels entered the series with the Timber Rattlers off a five-game series with the Beloit Snappers in Cedar Rapids. The Kernels went 2-3 as Beloit won the final three games of the set.

SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 4-7 in nine games against the Kernels this season. The Rattlers went 1-3 against Cedar Rapids at Perfect Game Field May 12-15. Wisconsin was 1-3 against the Kernels at Time Warner Cable Field June 2-5.

SEE YOU SOON, SEE YOU REAL SOON: The Timber Rattlers and Kernels will play a four game series at Time Warner Cable Field from August 20 through August 23.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .2398 as a team. They have scored 461 runs (3.9/game) and hit 54 home runs. The Kernels are hitting .251 as a team. They have scored 550 runs (4.7/game) and hit 51 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.32 while allowing a total of 576 runs (4.9/game). Cedar Rapids pitchers have a team ERA of 3.76 while allowing 494 runs (4.2/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 132 errors. The Kernels defense has committed 110 errors. Wisconsin is 19-37 on the road this season. Cedar Rapids is 35-24 at Perfect Game Field in 2009.

CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: RHP Ryan Chaffee was a third round pick of the Angels in the 2008 draft out of Chipola (FL) Junior College. Chaffee turned down a scholarship to LSU to sign with the Angels, but he did not pitch as a professional in 2008. Chaffee broke his foot early in the Junior College season, but came back and helped pitch Chipola to the Junior College World Series. But, he broke the foot again at the JCWS. In 2009, Chaffee is 8-5 with a 3.14ERA in 19 starts. In his start prior to this evening, Chaffee was the losing pitcher at home against Beloit on August 9. He allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out eight Beloit batters, but was on the losing end of 9-7 score. Chaffee has made two starts against the Timber Rattlers this season. He beat them at Perfect Game Field on May 13 for his first professional victory. On June 4 at Time Warner Cable Field, Chaffee beat the Timber Rattlers again. Chaffee has pitched 12 innings against Wisconsin this season and allowed two runs on three hits with seven walks and 13 strikeouts.
